Editorial Review for Baba Yega Restaurant – by Andrea Loera

The Scene
Since 1975, this converted bungalow-turned-eatery has charmed regulars with healthy fare and hearty portions. A crowd as eclectic as the menu dines in cozy tables throughout the house--on the back veranda with a view of the tranquil gardens and koi pond, oak-tree shaded front patio (ideal for people-watching) or the antique-filled main dining area. Service is casual and efficient.

The Food
The menu--featuring whole-grain breads and organic produce--excels with salads, sandwiches and vegetarian dishes. Must-try sandwiches include the smoked turkey and Brie, and grilled vegetable sandwich topped with feta cheese and Serrano pepper sauce. Veggie-burger fans can choose from the Boca burger topped with sauteed mushrooms, black-bean burger, or portobello with field greens and basil mayonnaise. It's only fair to mention that the 1/2-pound beef burger is no slouch, either. For lunch or dinner, grilled salmon is ample, served with herbed brown rice. Save room for homemade desserts.

We visited this establishment before and wanted to share it with our family for a celebration. The service was wonderful and the wait staff gracious. We are a food service family for over 20 years. Seafood was our specialty and the standards were very high for food safety. After beginning our meal with appetizers all was well....then the main course arrived. Within minutes of ingesting the "Special ".....one family member was so sick that we had to leave the resataurant. It of course ruined the evening and the money lost was a mere irritant compared to the lack of professionalism shown by the management and owner. After a call back to the establishment we were told the fish was removed from the line. The owner denies that but it was said by the manager on duty. The family member is fine now ...but after having over 10 hours of severe cramping , pounding headache, and weakness in her muscles..... not even able to stand..........I cannot imagine a worse way to celebrate!! So...we had possible scromboid poisioning from a piece of fish that was bad and called a "Special"............I will not suggest this restaurant to anyone ever again...but I will warn everyone I can to save their money and go to a Safe restaurant to eat. The owners lack of caring and blatent rudeness towards us is inexcusable and he should be ashamed and embarrassed at the entire incident.

I have loved Baba yaga for a long time. However, several months ago I had three meals in a row that were horrible. I don't know what has happened to their food preparation. It used to be pretty good. My last three experinces were overcooked tune steak, fish cooked in grease that was very old, and roasted chicken that was so over cooked it was black. I really regret it, because I have always liked going there. however after three bad experiences, I don't any more. This is not just my opinion, but is the opinion of everyone I have talked to about the matter. I write with the hope they will change and be the resturant I really liked/
