Volcano

Craving a martini with relaxed after-work conversation? Or a lively weekend mix of students, dancing and hanging on the patio? Volcano has both. We offer a dozen draft beers, wine and martinis that satisfy most tastes, but this spot really packs them in with its frozen screwdriver and specialty drinks. Owner Pete Mitchell personally selects the bar's jukebox contents, with an eclectic mix of everything- from vintage Kinks, Tribe Called Quest and blues veteran Little Joe Washington.

I have recently moved out to Colorado, but this is the one thing I miss most about Houston. The juke box is the greatest box I've ever seen. I like fairly obscure music, but this selection is even more than my tastes ever went. You can push random buttons and I'd love anything that came out of it. The drinks are great...all my friend's love the Bloody Marry's, the screwdrivers, etc. Not many tap beers, but what they have are high quality...no alcoholic water. The food menu is minimal, but great. Italian queso is a normal win. I always stopped here on my way back from work when 59 was backed up heading into downtown. A beer and a sandwich at the bar is a nice cool down. It does get crowded at nights with younger people, but this place shines during the day. The most laid-back place you'll find, typically with an older working crowd. Bring a pack of cards... play all day out on the porch, etc. We've never been hassled even if we haven't bought anything for hours. Sunday's are usually empty, and great for a day full of celebrating whatever it is you feel you want to celebrate. First game of pool for the day is always free!

Relaxed atmosphere. Lot of characters, I mean the customers and workers all talk to you like they know you. I guess some people won't like that. If you like good music, they've got one hell of a juke box in there... All selections are hand chosen w/ little notes to clue you in on stuff you might not know but might want to listen to. Cold beer and good drinks. Can't wait to go back.

First off, I feel the need to defend this place against its one bad review. I frequent the Volcano and have never seen it packed with obnoxious college kids or power-starved bouncers. In fact I think this person must be getting his bars confused. The Volcano is a great casual place to have a few beers or specialty drinks (the best bloody mary's I have ever had) and you don't have to scream over the music to hear what people are saying. One of my favorite places to get a drink and relax with friends in Houston.
