“I'm not a big drinker, So I was excited to see drinks that I could sip on, Like the Hot CoccoLoco; hot chocolate with Kalua, some cocco rum, AND homemade whipping cream to top it off!”
“The bar staff are cool and the patrons like to take it easy.”
“beer and a sandwich at the bar is a nice cool down.”
“like fairly obscure music, but this selection is even more than my tastes ever went.”

“Great music, great staff and the best drinks in town.”
“This place is overpriced and totally not worth it.”

This laid-back bar is good for groups and parties. Dig the day of the dead vibe.
Disappointing Staff.
I've been going to Volcano on occasion for years, and we headed there last Friday night to celebrate a friend's birthday. The atmosphere and drinks were great like usual, but the bartenders were TERRIBLE. It wasn't all that crowded and two of the staff acted like you were doing them a disservice by ordering a drink. I witnessed one bartender cut a patron off for trying to get her attention for a round of drinks. She accused him of yelling at her (which wasn't at all the case as I was standing next to him) and was beyond rude to him. When I finally was waited on, there was hardly a look of acknowledgement and certainly no smiles from the other bartender.
I wouldn't go back at all if it wasn't the only place in town to get decent Pisco Sour.
What a mess. I used to go to Under the Volcano ALL THE TIME. Last time I was there (about two Weds ago) there was a new girl who was a total mess with absolutely NO HELP from the staff, who treated her like total crap. This was probably just a reflection from the owner (I had a very short encounter with him during an interview for a spot at Leons Lounge, I could tell he was a total jerk and gratefully dodged that bullet), who was behind the bar for some reason (understaffed, much?) and who I heard talk down to every single staff member. Generally negative environment from someone who has worked and managed in the industry for a long time. Treat your employees better and maybe they'll treat each other better.
Bad food & Mediocre Drinks. I've been to this place twice. Aesthetically it's a cute place- nice outside seating. It has a very small parking lot- which I wouldn't mid if the place was worth going to. Happy Hour consists of taking $1.00 off of drinks that are priced at $8.00 or higher, even then the drinks are NOT worth the price. Mojitos are very watered down, the Cuba Libre is basically a slushi in a highball glass with a splash of liqor. I had the Italian style chips con queso it was terrible, it was like they gace me a very small soup and dropped a blob of cheese in the middle. I wen't twice- I always like to go back and give places a second try- this place is just not worth going to again.. sorry.
TERRIBLE!!!!.
I was there last Saturday with a large group of friends and unfortunately one of them got their credit card stolen by someone that works there, just by opening up a tab at the bar. An obscene amount of money was charged on it and now that person is having to deal with the credit card company to fix this problem. The service was horrible and the people are morons too.
I do not trust any of the employees that work there, and neither should you.
DO NOT GO THERE!!!
By the way I am only giving them a star because a rating is required. If I could I would put them in the negatives!!!!!
Changing for the worse.
Been a big fan of this place for several years... always recommending it and visiting for the freshly made high quality drinks...
Went there this weekend..and it su***! The drinks we had were TERRIBLE.
The only thing I can think of is that the new staff just doesn't know their way around that bar.
We left our drinks 2/3 full.. only to get home and realize we also got the wrong amount of change. Short changed! (partly our fault for not checking, but this certainly didn't help)
This place used to be great.. I hope this is just a one time deal.
Mine and my friend's favorite in Houston.
I have recently moved out to Colorado, but this is the one thing I miss most about Houston. The juke box is the greatest box I've ever seen. I like fairly obscure music, but this selection is even more than my tastes ever went. You can push random buttons and I'd love anything that came out of it.
The drinks are great...all my friend's love the Bloody Marry's, the screwdrivers, etc. Not many tap beers, but what they have are high quality...no alcoholic water. The food menu is minimal, but great. Italian queso is a normal win.
I always stopped here on my way back from work when 59 was backed up heading into downtown. A beer and a sandwich at the bar is a nice cool down.
It does get crowded at nights with younger people, but this place shines during the day. The most laid-back place you'll find, typically with an older working crowd. Bring a pack of cards... play all day out on the porch, etc. We've never been hassled even if we haven't bought anything for hours.
Sunday's are usually empty, and great for a day full of celebrating whatever it is you feel you want to celebrate. First game of pool for the day is always free!
my kind of bar. Relaxed atmosphere. Lot of characters, I mean the customers and workers all talk to you like they know you. I guess some people won't like that. If you like good music, they've got one hell of a juke box in there... All selections are hand chosen w/ little notes to clue you in on stuff you might not know but might want to listen to. Cold beer and good drinks. Can't wait to go back.
The best Bloody Mary's in Texas. First off, I feel the need to defend this place against its one bad review. I frequent the Volcano and have never seen it packed with obnoxious college kids or power-starved bouncers. In fact I think this person must be getting his bars confused. The Volcano is a great casual place to have a few beers or specialty drinks (the best bloody mary's I have ever had) and you don't have to scream over the music to hear what people are saying. One of my favorite places to get a drink and relax with friends in Houston.
Avoid if you can.
Straight to the point:
Pro's
1. Nicely decorated
2. Reasonable selection of beverages
3. Good outdoor seating
Con's
1. Some staff are very rude
2. Bouncers have been known to through too much weight around
3. Too many college kids...(sorry guys, just I am a bit older and quieter that is all)
4. Parking can be difficult
5. Food pretty boring
TTFN
good stuff. thoroughly enjoyed my experience. wonderous bartender (anne) definitely seems like the brush your teeth before bed type of gal.
