What People Are Saying About Volcano

Featured Review

Joshua Hinsdale

Contributor

In Short – Craving a martini with relaxed after-work conversation? Or a lively weekend mix of students, dancing and hanging on the patio? Volcano has both. A dozen draft beers, wine and martinis satisfy most tastes, but this spot really packs them in with its frozen screwdriver and specialty drinks. Owner Pete Mitchell personally selects the bar's jukebox contents, an eclectic mix of everything, like vintage Kinks, Tribe Called Quest and blues veteran Little Joe Washington.

Editor's Tips

What to Drink:
For a little Latin flair, try the standout sangria and Cuba libres.
The Extras:
The kitchen serves up delicious tapas appetizers and cold sandwiches (the prosciutto is a favorite).
Save Money:
Happy hour, 2pm to 7pm, Monday through Friday, knocks a dollar off all mixed drinks and drafts (including seasonal St. Arnold's special brews).
Where to Sit:
Two outdoor patios offer sanctuary from noise and smoky patrons. When weather permits, the interior windows remain open.

Disappointing Staff

by sdschn

I've been going to Volcano on occasion for years, and we headed there last Friday night to celebrate a friend's birthday. The atmosphere and drinks were great like usual, but the bartenders were TERRIBLE. It wasn't all that crowded and two of the staff acted like you were doing them a disservice by ordering a drink. I witnessed one bartender cut a patron off for trying to get her attention for a round of drinks. She accused him of yelling at her (which wasn't at all the case as I was standing next to him) and was beyond rude to him. When I finally was waited on, there was hardly a look of acknowledgement and certainly no smiles from the other bartender.

I wouldn't go back at all if it wasn't the only place in town to get decent Pisco Sour.

What a mess

by likeahurricane

I used to go to Under the Volcano ALL THE TIME. Last time I was there (about two Weds ago) there was a new girl who was a total mess with absolutely NO HELP from the staff, who treated her like total crap. This was probably just a reflection from the owner (I had a very short encounter with him during an interview for a spot at Leons Lounge, I could tell he was a total jerk and gratefully dodged that bullet), who was behind the bar for some reason (understaffed, much?) and who I heard talk down to every single staff member. Generally negative environment from someone who has worked and managed in the industry for a long time. Treat your employees better and maybe they'll treat each other better.

TERRIBLE!!!!

by Smegsbee

I was there last Saturday with a large group of friends and unfortunately one of them got their credit card stolen by someone that works there, just by opening up a tab at the bar. An obscene amount of money was charged on it and now that person is having to deal with the credit card company to fix this problem. The service was horrible and the people are morons too.

I do not trust any of the employees that work there, and neither should you.

DO NOT GO THERE!!!

By the way I am only giving them a star because a rating is required. If I could I would put them in the negatives!!!!!

Changing for the worse

by userofreality1

Been a big fan of this place for several years... always recommending it and visiting for the freshly made high quality drinks...

Went there this weekend..and it su***! The drinks we had were TERRIBLE.

The only thing I can think of is that the new staff just doesn't know their way around that bar.

We left our drinks 2/3 full.. only to get home and realize we also got the wrong amount of change. Short changed! (partly our fault for not checking, but this certainly didn't help)

This place used to be great.. I hope this is just a one time deal.

  • Pros: cool vibe
  • Cons: new bar staff

Mine and my friend's favorite in Houston

by gearwhine

I have recently moved out to Colorado, but this is the one thing I miss most about Houston. The juke box is the greatest box I've ever seen. I like fairly obscure music, but this selection is even more than my tastes ever went. You can push random buttons and I'd love anything that came out of it.

The drinks are great...all my friend's love the Bloody Marry's, the screwdrivers, etc. Not many tap beers, but what they have are high quality...no alcoholic water. The food menu is minimal, but great. Italian queso is a normal win.

I always stopped here on my way back from work when 59 was backed up heading into downtown. A beer and a sandwich at the bar is a nice cool down.

It does get crowded at nights with younger people, but this place shines during the day. The most laid-back place you'll find, typically with an older working crowd. Bring a pack of cards... play all day out on the porch, etc. We've never been hassled even if we haven't bought anything for hours.

Sunday's are usually empty, and great for a day full of celebrating whatever it is you feel you want to celebrate. First game of pool for the day is always free!

  • Pros: Best juke box ever, staff
  • Cons: College crowd and loud at night
