Editorial Review for Hobby Center for the Performing Arts – by Matthew M Miller
The Background
An elaborate, spanking-new performing arts center fills a city void, providing two elegant theaters generated specifically for theater and musical performances. Since its May 2002 opening, the towering roofline and ornate halls have made this spectacular vision a cultural hub and progressed the city's goal to be a force in the 21st-century fine arts community.
The Experience
Sarofim Hall, a 2,600-seat theater acoustically designed for touring Broadway productions, is home to "Theatre Under the Stars" as well as the "Broadway in Houston" series, staging shows such as "Chicago" and "The Full Monty." Zilkha Hall, an intimate 500-seat venue with full orchestra pit, showcases smaller touring groups as part of the "Uniquely Houston" series that celebrates diversity. Artista, the latest from Chef Michael Cordúa of Churrascos and Américas fame, offers lunch and dinner, as well as post-show desserts, appetizers and beverages.
