The Scene
From its founding in 1866 as a school committed to educating newly freed slaves, Fisk has continually been one of the country's top universities. The 40-acre campus, dotted with gardens and historic buildings, sits two miles west of downtown. Serving approximately 800 students, the school is committed to teaching leadership through a strong liberal arts program. Many famous African Americans have been a part of the university--W.E.B. Du Bois, Booker T. Washington, Thurgood Marshall and Nikki Giovanni, to name a few.
The Details
The Race Relations Institute is nationally known for promoting tolerance through education. The arts are big at Fisk--since 1871, the Jubilee Singers have performed throughout the U.S. and Europe. In the Carl Van Vechten Gallery, you'll find the Alfred Stieglitz collection, works by Georgia O'Keeffe and one of the nation's most respected collections of African-American art.
