Houston >Hillstone Kirby
EXCELLENT restaurant!. This is the BEST RESTAURANT ever! The staff is very professional, polite and courteous. The manager makes it a point to personally greet each guest! (This is a first). The menu is outstanding and the chefs are consistently GREAT! If you are seeking a great meal in a very beautiful setting, this place will provide you with a MEMORABLE meal. Dining here is relaxing and the food is very tasty and will make you say 'WOW!" GOOD JOB HILLSTONE! I will be a regular at this restaurant!
Don't judge our city by this place. Visitors to our great city: If you happen to dine at Houston's on Kirby please don't judge the city or its citizens by your experience here. I can't explain its popularity, although at one time Houstn' served the best fast casual food in the city. The arrogant attitude by management, the untrained waiters, the over-priced menu, all contribute to a negative dining experience. At least the former patrons at the location on Westheimer and Fountainview have gotten relief - that location shut down.
very romantic. My boyfriend and I went on 2/20/09 and yes like many of you have mentioned, the wait is long. We waited 30 minutes for table. The food(rotessirie chicken) was GREAT my boyfriend was licking his fingers. Atmosphere was romantic he felt he as underdressed. He did not like the fact that he had to take off his hat. the price for a soda is $3 and no refill thats was crazy. But we enjoyed the place.
$13 Chopped Meat Patty.
Because of my diet, I ordered a plain broiled meat patty (instead of the full-blown hamburger on the menu that included lettuce, tomato and onion on a house-made bun).
They charged me the full price of a hamburger. That's their "policy" ~ and perogative.
It was the best chopped meat patty I've ever had and the worst price I've ever paid for one. The $13 price left a bad taste in my mouth.
YUMMY YUMMY YUMMY!!!. One of my favorite chain restaurants in town... actually probably my favorite chain restaurant in town. Best spinach/artichoke dip I've ever had hands down. Amazing French dip sandwhich. Awesome fries/Hamburger and great ribeye. While the wait can be annoying, I find that going to the bar and having a drink makes always makes the wait more bearable.
It's a Waiting Game. The Kirby location is nearest where I live, and the point of reference in this review. I have always enjoyed many of the salad offerings at Houston's, and the veggie burger too. I can't think of a time when I was disappointed with either menu selection. I've always gotten great service at the bar; the wines by the glass are run-of-the-mill, but drinkable nonetheless. Never had serious issues with the waitstaff or management. With few exceptions, the service has been consistently good over the years. So then why has it been almost one year since I last visited this location? Well, it's simple. The wait. No matter what day or time of day, there is a wait. And usually longer than 15 minutes, which is aggravated by the lack of space to accommodate the hordes of people who jam into this restaurant. Until Houston's can make the waiting experience more tolerable, I don't forsee going back, ever.
great food, great service.
i have been into several houston's locations and all of them are really nice and clean, the staff is always friendly and the food is always great, sometimes is more than one hour waiting time but you can enjoy a drink at the bar meanwhile.
they took out of the menu the Texas burger, but if you ask them they will prepare it for yourself still on saturdays like usual.
they should include the 'tres leches" at all the locations, unfortunately is available only in Miami menu.
Fool me once shame on you.....
My friend made the mistake of choosing Houston's for her going-away dinner. Having been there before and tasted their bland food I was not exactly thrilled, but I went anyway.
Not only were we told that they do not accept reservations, which is ridiculous enough as it is, but then we were told that they could not accommodate a party of 9 on a slow Monday night. Apparently all of their tables are bolted to the ground, as if their customers suffer from kleptomania and they'll take off with one of them.
As we were trying to decide if we were staying, they gave away their largest open table to a party of six who had walked in a couple of seconds AFTER me. When we finally squeezed into a tiny, uncomfortable booth, the same 14 year old hostess, who was incapable of thinking ahead and saving their largest table for their largest party, came by and informed my friend that he would have to remove his (non-baseball) hat. After all, why should they make good service and food their top priority when they can just alienate their customers instead?
Our waiter was friendly, but that wasn't enough to save the night. We ordered an appetizer and a couple of us had salads as entrees. The salads were the first to come out even though they'd been ordered as entrees, and even though we reminded them, the appetizer didn't come out until AFTER all of the entrees. The food was less than mediocre; of the 5 items they have on their pathetic menu they couldn't even get ONE right. My $13 chicken sandwich was basically just chicken and a chunk of iceberg lettuce, and my friend's $31 "medium" fillet was fatty and charred with a pathetic lump of spinach as its only side.
I will NEVER make the mistake of going there agian and neither will my friends. The service is appalling, and the food atrocious and over-priced.
Great Food, Good Atmosphere, Wonderful Place.
I have had the pleasure of frequenting Houston's on Westheimer. It is always a wonderful experience. Some of the reviews on here are totally misleading. The complaints about no reservations and no takeout does not mean a place is 1 Star! Come on people.
Anyways, I think the food here is awesome. I would highly recommend this restaurant for dates. It is definitely a romanitc spot. There are mostly booths and every table has a lit candle to add to the ambiance. Also, the music is typically chill and adds perfectly to the environment. The bar is another cool spot. Plenty of selection and nice/generous bar tenders. Wine selection is strong as well.
I highly recommend the Spinach Cheese Dip for an appetizer and the Pork Chops for your main entree. French Fries are very good, as noted by the numerous awards.
Don't hesitate to give this place a try. The wait staff and atmosphere is great.
Why so snooty?.
The type of food Houston's serves definitively does not give the right for the establishment to act self-absorbed. I don't think ribs, burgers, and chicken fingers deserve a snooty staff and a "Proper Attire Required" sign on the front door. The menu even goes as far to say: "Cellphone usage not permitted in the dining room." Although the food is good, the snooty service doesn't make it worth your while (and money). My friend and I felt rushed. Waiter did not ask for permission before removing plates from the table (he removed my friend's plate while she was obviously still eating). And if you want to split something, forget it. They will look at you and say: "Well, we can't SPLIT something, but we can give you an extra plate." They'll say it like splitting a meal with someone is something only an "average place" would do and that they're better than that. They will also act rude if something did not come out of the kitchen the way YOU ordered it. My friend that dined with me said that she can go to Chick-fil-A and get better chicken and certainly much friendlier service. Mentioned by another reviewer, they do not serve you ice if you get water as your primary beverage.
If you considering Houston's, I suggest your local Chili's. Similar food, but wider selection. And employees that actually care about your dining experience.
