TQLA is the premier spot for tequila tasting in Houston. With more than 400 types of tequila in stock, they've cleverly used the bottles as decor, packing the entire wall from counter to ceiling with bottles of tequila, lit up in a way that makes you want to imbibe. Do so responsibly, y'all.
This place pays homage to their love for the agave happy juice (duh, look at the name)! As if that is not obvious by looking at the decor, talking with the mixologists, or even just looking at the vast amount of tequilas offered at the bar. The bar is piled high with what seems to be any Tequila your little heart desires!
Pretty Good! – I have been to this area before and have eaten at places next door, however I went to TQLA with a few friends! The margs were good--and strong! I had one and that's all I needed, so if you're looking for some strong margs, this is the place to be! I tried the veggie nachos--very different from most other places I've been to-but in a good way! I want to go back again!
HORRIBLE SERVICE, MANAGER AND WAITER... – So, I wanted to go somewhere different for my birthday and had heard from a friend that TQLA was a nice place. I looked it up online and since I'm a sucker for nice ambiance and margaritas I decided to give it a try. Once Friday after work 10 of my friends met me there. It was crowded w/an hour and 45 minute wait so we decided to sit at the bar. It took the bus boy FOREVER to clean the table as we were standing there. That was just the beginning of the MADNESS!! As the dining room cleared we moved to a table, but not before the waitress in the bar area could get our checks together. She was just confused as to who had what and the amount of change we should receive. Once we moved we were greeted by a fast talking, pushover of a waiter. While taking drink orders I asked him which margarita was the strongest...he replied they are ALL THE SAME! Excuse me, they are all the same?!? I had never heard of that before. If they were all the same why did he insist on bringing us the most expensive one? Didn't really matter because they were horrible. Once we asked him to change them the manager came over. Neither of them understood that a couple of us didn't like the margarita. After that episode, we realized that it had been FOREVER and the waiter had not come back to take our orders. Once we got his attention...I wasn't quite sure what I wanted so I asked if he could start at the other end of the table and he said NO! He said he had to start w/me and since I wasn't ready he walked off. By this time I was highly upset so I asked for the manager so that we could get another waiter...instead he came over to the table with the same attitude as the waiter. He never apologized for his waiter's behavior, but threatened to call the police. Unsure as to how it escalated so far out of control I WAS READY TO GO!! A couple of my guests left before we could finish out the night. What a horrible way to start my birthday weekend!!!! Needless to say, I WON'T BE RETURNING TO TQLA!!!!!!!!
Outstanding Service! – I went to TQLA on Saturday night and will definately be visiting again! Their prices were great and I loved the drink menu...best skinny margeritas in town! I had the chicken taco's,with a twist... it was healthy and filling! The service was a bit slow in the bar area where we sat, but it was a packed Saturday night so that was understandable. On our way out the manager was very courteous and even ran across the street to get a cab for our group. All in all I was very impressed and look forward to coming back!
My favorite new Houston hot-spot! – This isn't another Molinas or El Tiempo. You will be happily surprised by TQLA - a refreshing, upscale concept hat combines coastal, Mexican, and Southwestern cuisine to create dishes that are sure to please any palate. I was pleased to see a lot of seafood and lighter/healthier items on the menu.
The atmosphere and decor are the first thing that you notice when you walk in - very trendy but without being "snobby" - this place has a massive glowing bar that resembles glossy lava and a glowing sunset art piece in the main dining area - the design and decor are top notch but the place still has a warm vibe to it...
The drink menu is a multi-page book - they have over 170 tequilas and a good selection of specialty cocktails and margaritas. My favorite was the grapefruit mint martini - wow, SOOOO good. Their margaritas are awesome, but watch out, they will sneak up on you.
The food... For appetizers we had the blue corn fried oysters - the cream sauce that comes with them makes this a heavenly combination. We followed that up with the crab cake ... You would have to fly to Maryland to get anything that could hold water against this tasty, fresh treat. For my entree, I had the mahi-mahi... prepared with capers, peppers, atop cilantro rice...It makes me hungry just to write about it.
Our server was friendly, explained the menu and covered a variety of tequila/drink choices, and provided very good overall service.
TQLA is my favorite new Houston hot-spot!
Tried it twice and will never go back – I normally only write a review when a restaurant is really good but my experiences here were so bad I felt the need to warn people. The first time I went to TQLA with a group of my friends and we sat at a table in the bar area, to start out we were a group of 7 girls and the waiter put one basket of chips on the table, the table was long and obviously no one at the opposite could reach the chips, wouldn’t have been a big deal if we got more chips when we asked but instead 20 minutes and 3 request later he brought some more chips. The second and biggest issue was the margaritas, my friend ordered the house and I ordered a platinum, I tasted my margarita and it was terrible, you know that real fake taste that leaves a bad aftertaste, that is what it tasted like, I tasted my friend’s house to find we had the same exact margarita. When I complained to the waiter he brought me another one- equally as gross but just decided I didn’t feel like complaining anymore, I think they use fake lime juice-I’m a big fan of margaritas so I was expecting this place to be awesome but they were just gross- Cylone or El Tiempo blows this place away. If anything was ok it was the food but the service was so bad my friends and I were just too disappointed to really enjoy anything- and of course right when he drops the bill the waiter offers a million apologies-hmm wonder if he was trying to not get a bad tip. Figuring this might have been a bad experience because we were sitting in the bar area I tried this place again last weekend with my husband and family-big mistake. Margaritas were just as terrible and staff at this place is just ridiculous, two of our dishes including mine were cold, I decided to deal with it my dad who had the ribeye told the waiter he didn’t want to eat it- the manager then came out and said I’m going to bring you another one- 10 minutes later he comes back and says “sorry we ran out of steak, can I bring u some fish” this almost sound like I’m making this up but then he came back out to inform my dad that the fish had run out and he would bring him some tacos. My dad was so angry he didn’t even touch the food. Two horrible experiences is enough for me, this places needs to pull it together fast.
