Tips for Flora & Muse

April 01, 2013

I have tried to give this place a chance so many times. I really want to like it. I love the atmosphere and the cocktails are excellent. There is never a wait even on a Friday or Saturday night. The food is very inconsistent, as well as the service. Me and my fiance ate here on March 30th. We shared two appetizers and got the fish special. The calamari and Mushroom Flat bread were excellent. The Trout had a tomato cream sauce on it that was way too salty. The crab cake had carrots in it which gave it an odd taste. Within 45 minutes of leaving we discovered we had food poisoning. (Later discovering it was E. Coli) Needless to say, that was the last straw.

This is my first time to dine here in Flora and Muse. I tried the dishes and it was very delicious. I would recommend to everyone.

DO NOT EAT HERE. I have gotten food poisoning twice working there, They do not wear gloves in the kitchen and leave seafood out on the counters for 7 hours before serving it. I complained to the managers that crab legs don't have to sit out that long to thaw. Yes they are frozen. I continually saw flies everywhere and when I complained to Hyari ( the owner) he explained that an exterminator cost too much. This place does not care about the well being of its guest of staff.

HORRENDOUS service. Could have been SO much better!. Me and my three girlfriends arrived for a "mom's night out" at 7:30 p.m. We did not leave until 10:30 p.m. The place was not very crowded so we expected decent service. We were seated at the back left table on the patio. Our total was about $200 including an overly generous 20%+ tip and our server was a lady in her 40s with long hair who stated she had been a server for 22 years. I am sorry but I did not get her name and I did not get a receipt.

We ordered cocktails within a few minutes of arrival and they took 20 minutes to arrive. My personal drink was a Maker's Mark on ice. When it arrived, the ice was mostly melted. So, I suspect that the bartender poured it immediately but that our server did not pick it up. Bad start.

The wine ordering was a debacle. There was not one bottle of Malbec in the restaurant, which we had been told about ahead of time. So, we selected one Pinot after another and imagine that, they were not available! But the one $75 Pinot was magically available and HIGHLY recommended. We asked if we would be charged the $40 price (same as the bottles we were selecting) for the wine since you didn't have what we asked for, repeatedly. Our server said no, but that she would take 10% off of our bill because of that. So, we ordered the $55 Zinfandel which was served warm and timed poorly after the food arrival.

Our food came relatively quickly, but almost too quickly as we received our wine bottle after the food was on the table. We ordered 3 flatbreads, a few salads and one appetizer. After the food was served we had to ask for napkins, silverware, salt & pepper. We were not given plates for our food and since we were sharing, it was a bit awkward, but we made it work.

We did not complain one time and tried to be patient since it appeared that you were severely understaffed. Our water glasses were empty most of the time and when we were told we would get more water, it would be another 15 minutes before that happened. Our server was nowhere in sight to get her attention to make things right. She even came over at one point to "take care of" our check, which was NOT discounted the 10% as promised, of course we had not touched the bill because we were not finished. We still needed water but instead she was more focused on collecting her tip so she could leave.

3 hours for dinner! Ridiculous. We only had one bottle of wine and one cocktail each in that long time. We wanted to drink more but it just took that long to get what we had that we decided to leave and drink elsewhere.

We waved goodbye to our server who was drinking champagne and smoking on the patio. (Is smoking ALLOWED in restaurants in Houston anymore? I don't think so!) Upon our departure, we stood at the front of the patio and talked (not very quietly) for a few minutes. At that point I remembered that I had left two gift bags at our table. I went back to the table which had not been cleared but shockingly, the gift bags were GONE. In the few minutes since our departure your staff had taken my bags. I was SHOCKED and very angry. Our waitress was nowhere to be found at this point so I found a staff member inside who said he did not know what I was talking about. Our server then comes in from somewhere in the back and tells him to go to the back office where she had put my gift for "safe-keeping". She then informs me that she consolidated the bags and threw away one of the gift bags. Seriously? Not only did she touch my belongings, but she took the liberty to throw away one of the GIFT bags and the tissue paper? I am sure after rummaging around my personal belongings the staff realized that there was nothing of value to them since it was children's clothing and toys. That is unacceptable. More unacceptable was that we were still standing by the patio, where the server could obviously see and hear us. Instead of taking the gifts to the back, she should have taken them directly to us.

HOUSTON'S WORST SERVICE....really!. Words cannot describe how horrible the service is for the restaurant...you would have to experience it to believe it. I have only dined there on the weekends so I have no idea if weekday service is better, but I highly doubt it. The head manager, Hayri, who is also apparently a managing partner was made aware of the troubles going on at my table which ranged from missing food items, to over-charges on the bill, comes out, doesn't believe that anything is wrong and in no way accommodated our table. Food takes almost an hour to come out, comes out wrong and then you wait another 30 for the correct item and there are no accommodations made on the bill. We were charged for the bread we ate WHILE WE WAITED ON THEM TO FIX OUR INCORRECT ORDER! Regular, plain slices of Bagguette. I asked for the check; waited 30 minutes, it never arrived so my daughter went to the bar to request it and it was still another 15 minutes before it was brought to us. In 12 years of dining out in Houston, I have NEVER encountered service this bad.

Great Atmosphere and Great Food. We went here for a late lunch on Sunday afternoon and i was so pleased with Flora and Muse. We were seated on their quaint little patio and listened to the lovely jazz band with an incredibly talented singer. The cocktails were great and so was the food.We have the zucchni fritters, flat bread pizza and grilled shimp salad (all amazing) and finished off with some delicious coffee and a crepe filled with banans and nutella, yum! I was really pleased with my experience with Flora and Muse and will definately be dining there again soon!

Not Much Bang for Your Buck. Although the ambiance is quite charming, and the concept of the restaurant is pretty cool, I think the food is overpriced and the service is scant. It takes forever to get waited on there on a weekday morning for breakfast, and it's no better at lunch time. They also have something against using air conditioning, so the place is usually stuffy and humid. I hope they can improve as it's a nice place. Kind of all show and no go.

What a wonderful place! Houston needed this one!. There isn't any other place like this in Houston. Trendy bar area with comfy booths, beautiful chandeliers, and a very European cafe/floral shop all are part of this amazing place.

Flora & Muse serves breakfast, lunch and dinner and the food is much better and reasonably priced compare to many other comparable places. It is the best place to hang out with good friends or take a date.

Women's tea room. This place reminds me of a tearoom. The decor is pleasant. I had a hard time finding the place due to poor signage and parking at CityCentre. CityCentre's on-line map is so small, it's illegible. Also, it doesn't show the location of businesses. The parking garage is a good walk from the restaurant, so if you have an elderly family member, this may not be a good choice. I ordered the asparagus omelette, and the asparagus were so hard, I had to remove them all from the omelette. The small pieces of bread served were very hard. How about a basket of small muffins instead? The service was very good, but overall, the food was very so-so.
