Tips for The Barbed Rose

We have been to this restaurant 4 times. We've been impressed in the past and looked forward to celebrating our birthdays (6/9) there after an absence of almost a year. My how things have changed! I ordered the yellow fin tuna with saffron mashed potatoes and a fresh, local tomato salad. The tuna was dry (my husband said it tasted "fishy" - wonder if the age of the tuna was the reason our waiter was pushing the dish). My husband had the wild boar which was little more than a couple of ribs. Good thing one of his sides was a loaded baked potato or he wouldn't have been satisfied.

I don't know what happened since the last time we were there, but we were severely disappointed. The expense wasn't worth it at all! They are making noise on their website that big changes are coming this Summer. Hope the changes are for the good. We won't be so quick to recommend this restaurant in the future.

Salty food, poor service, overpriced!!. My mom has been a great supporter of The Barbed Rose, Burger Bar, and The Tavern since they first opened. She invites many friends and family to join her and experience what she feels is "the best thing in Alvin". With full confidence in this restaurant, she decided to have my sister's bday party at the Burger Bar. The food was ridiculously salty, the mushrooms were so salt loaded that my husband had to scoop them off his burger, my father never got the sweet potato fries that he ordered, and to top it off - the waitress failed to split the check like we had requested when we first sat down, so my mother had to pay for most of the guests invited. I hope they improve their food quality and train their staff to handle a large party. As of right now, they cannot handle a full restaurant.

Unheard of Alvin Dining Experience. The Barbed Rose and a 30th anniversary proved to be a winning combination for my wife and I. The filet and the rib eye was both perfect and the banana's foster bread puddings was fabulous. Having eaten lunch here before and in The Burger Bar I knew the food was good but the dinner experience was beyond good!!!!! A drive to Alvin for a Brabed Rose lunch or dinner is well worth your time. We are fortunate that we live here and can enjoy all of The Alvin Restruarant Group's fine dinning locations. By the way The Gordon Street Tavern next to the Brabed Rose rates 5 Stars as well!!!!!!

Treasure in Alvin. I was a little concerned about going to The Barbed Rose because of some of the negative reviews -- glad I didn't let that sway me, I was thoroughly delighted! I chose to go to the Burger Bar side and was surprised when I was offered menus from both the restaurant and the burger bar; that was nice. The restaurant offerings were pricey but I didn't think they were out of line with nice steak house pricing; however, wanting to keep my check on the lower end I selected from the "Tricked out Burger" section. I ordered a 1/4 lb burger with cheese and mushrooms for $6 and added a side Caeser salad for $3.50. The salad was different from any Caeser salad I have ever had but it was very good and the burger was amazing -- I had a great meal for under $10.00 (not including tax and tip) and the staff was attentive and extremely friendly! As a side note, I was also happy to learn that they purchase as much as possible from local farms and vendors. I will go back and suggest that others try it as well!

Salmon was good. The food was good, plated well, but cold. Appitizer never showed up, when asked about it, was told it went to a private party at the restaurant, so I guess they were out of it after that, because it still didn't show up after asking. Ordered 2 desserts, got 1, had to ask for the 2nd one again. Service wasn't too bad, but we spent 90 minutes there before we could get the check. Our waiter had no knowledge of the wine list, and did not check on us too often. The food was very pricey and alacarte. The atmosphere was extremely loud and you could not speak to each other without having to yell. We went there for our anniversary, we will not be back nor would we recommend the restaurant to friends.

Burger Bar is Superior. My wife and I have eaten in the restaurant once and it was very good. The wild boar was succulent and remarkably smooth. Some authentic gaminess but not at all offputting. Wine list is good and the markup minimal.

The attached burger bar is one of the best inexpensive restaurants in the county. I am a fan of the portobello mushroom burger with Texas Goat cheese and jalapenos. All that for what you pay for an overloaded burger at Chili's or other family chain.

Cold food, slow service, wrong orders, don't bother!. We went with some friends to the Barbed Rose tonight for dinner. The menu for the Burger Bar was small but interesting. Prices seemed reasonable. However, service was awful. It took forever to get our drinks and our food. It took forever! When the food finally arrived, they got 3 of 5 orders incorrect and all of the food was cold. When we finished dinner, we were never offered a dessert menu. When we asked for one, she gave us just 1 menu and left. That menu had a line drawn in pen across one of the items, to show they were out. The bananas foster bread pudding was inexplicably watery, and overly sweet. Won't be going back here.

Had its points, but not enough. I ate there with a gift certificate my father purchase for my birthday. It was a generous amount of money for my wife and I. We went on a Monday, and found that they offer 3 course dinner specials, and decided to give them a try. What they don't tell you is that the dinner specials are halved portions.

The house salad was bland. The smokey dressing was not flavorful. My wife did not care for her wedge salad; she said it tasted odd, like something wasn't fresh. The barbecue shrimp (only 3 of them on the portion) was good, and I found the blue corn grits to be interesting. The desserts were tasty, bananas foster bread pudding and cheesecake.

The restaurant doesn't offer any incentives to buy a gift certificate, so it is dollar for dollar, but they do not want you to tip on the gift certificate. If you do, they give the waiter a gift certificate for the tip.

We had a lot of money left over on the gift certificate, so we ate at the outside burger bar later, and I enjoyed that more than the inside. At least the portions were generous, if a bit pricey for a burger.

I won't find myself hurrying back. It just wasn't that inspiring. We enjoy luxury dining occasionally, but the policies of this place are a total turnoff.

Beware - don't buy gift certificates here.

Wonderful evening!. First off i would like to say I was a bit skeptical considering some of the past reviews I have read but I decided to give it a try. I have to admit i was pleasantly surprised. Other reviews claimed this place to be over priced but i feel it was reasonable. $25 for an angus ribeye is about par and $45 for the Kobe is not too terribly bad either. i have been many places that charge way more. They tend to cook the steaks a little on the rare side so just keep that in mind when ordering. Contrary to past reviews, the wine list must have changed and gotten better. They must have had close to 70 different choices and the beverage director was there to reccommend us a few good wines to try. We decided on the Prisoner which sells for $48 a bottle. Stopped by HEB after dinner to pick up some for my house and was surprised to find it for $40. Not much of a mark up if you ask me. Overall it was a good expereince in a tucked away corner in Alvin.

Unfortunately for the people who read the reviews on here, mostly customers with bad experiences are the only ones to write a review. This one is definately worth a try!

Take Heed in the name.... My boyfriend and I visited for our anniversary dinner and were not impressed. The food was hit and miss ... which is not good for their price range.

Complaints include:

Sour tea

Bitter Salads and dressings

Cold Bread/spread did not complement salads

Over priced

Complements include:

Excellent service

Nice presentation

Entre was good but again, nothing extraordinary

I'm sure they are looking to do something alittle different, but feel they missed their mark.
