The strip center that Umai is located in is one of the bleaker in Chinatown, but that just makes the café, decorated with beautiful modern touches like Mondrian-style windows, more of a hidden gem. Instead of sushi, Umai offers dishes like hearty pork cutlet curry, a satisfying beef tendon ramen with springy egg noodles and a perfectly crispy shisho hasami. The curious fusion dishes like the katsu burger are eyebrow-raising but you won’t go wrong with the affordable set menu options, which come with a huge array of side dishes from miso soup to stewed eggplant.
