Another unhappy bidder – I had a similar bad experience to some of the reviewers here. I bid on the sitting plus 1 free 5x7 at a charity event and won. Like others, I was told to bring a black shirt and a white shirt and my two dogs. I will be the first to admit that my dogs were a bit unruly while there, but this "professional" photographer did NOTHING to help make them or me more relaxed. I felt rushed from the moment I walked thru the door and was sweating the entire time because it was ridiculously hot in the filthy, unkempt studio. Clearly not an environment conducive to making people look photogenic. Did I mention It was FILTHY?
I had been on his website prior to the photo session and was unimpressed with the work (I refuse to call it art) but figured it was free, so what the heck. I should have stayed home...the 30 minutes I spent there was a complete waste of mascara.
He took FIVE shots during the black shirt phase then said "why don't we just see what we have". My dogs were extremely uncomfortable with all the strange noises he was making and they refused to sit still - something I don't have a problem with in other places. My dogs fly on commercial airlines regularly as service dogs and sit right at my feet with no problem. There was definitely a weird vibe in the air in that studio.
I have had professional pics done with a real pet photographer before and this was NOTHING like that experience.
This man does digital pics and takes THREE WEEKS to have the untouched prints returned?? I don't get that at all! Something doesn't seem right about that. Unless you order the ultra expensive retouching (read: photoshopping), I cannot imagine that it takes 3 full weeks for him to get his ass over to Walgreens to have these amateurish prints printed.
I felt somewhat pressured into buying something when we sat down to look at the few shots he took so I ordered a 5x7 print (unphotoshopped), but changed my mind when I left there and called to cancel the purchased print before I even got home. I told him to keep the free one too.
I am keeping my fingers crossed that the charge for the canceled picture does not show up on my credit card statement since I left the number with him. I'm a bit worried now that I've seen some of the reviews that call him a scam artist. I will definitely be disputing the charge if that happens.
I completely expected to be pitched for more pictures when I got there. The guy is trying to run a business and free sittings and photographs don't earn a living for him. The up-sell is probably how he makes his money. HOWEVER, his poor people skills and rushed style were the worst example of salesmanship i've ever seen. There was not even a small attempt at being personable. I got the distinct impression that he could not be bothered with any of it.
One would think that the guy behind the camera tring to sell his craft would make at least SOME effort to make you WANT to spend money. This guy could not have cared less about earning it honestly. He must be independently wealthy...he's not sitting in cheap real estate. I'm convinced this must be some kind of tax deduction business for him.
After reading the reviews posted here and coming to the same conclusion as the other bad reviewers, I am certain the 5 star raters are either Gabriel himself or people connected to him. 2 stars, maybe. 3 stars, i'd be skeptical but I guess some people have no taste. 5 stars? Not a chance!
Don't waste your time (or your mascara) by booking your five minutes with this guy. Find someone good and enjoy your shoot and your pictures.
Use someone else...trust me – We as others have posted bid on the free 5x7 and sitting fee at a silent auction for our church. I wondered why no one else bid on the item, and it only went for $25. I soon found out. When my wife called to make the appointment, she inquired about the pricing. When he gave her astronomical figures, she asked why it was so much. Instead of explaining, he abruptly asked if we wanted to cancel our sitting. We decided to get the free pic anyway and move on.
When we got there, the place was unprofessional and dirty sheets covered milk crates all over the filthy floor. During the shoot, his door was cracked and his dog came running in terrifying my 1 year old son. Needless to say, our son's focus was on the dog outside and not on taking pictures. When he could not get my son's attention, he whooped at him scaring him to death and it shows in the photo.
Any commenter that suggest he has a "comforting nature" or "sense of humor" is flat out lying. He has no personality whatsoever and did not seem to appreciate us being there.
We ended up purchasing one 5x7 for $60. I was then instructed 3 weeks later they were ready and he would put them in the mailbox for me to pick up (At that price, you would think that he would at least take the time to walk to the front door to personally hand the pictures to me and say thank you). I went to pick up the pictures, and they were not in the mailbox as he stated and it caused a scene as his 4 dogs barked noisily at me while I tried to ring the doorbell. I had to make a second trip back to his "studio" to pick up the pictures that were finally placed in the mailbox.
The picture quality was adequate, but not anything you couldn't get somewhere else for cheaper. I would have rather gone to Sears or JC Penney, at least the photographers there would have pretended like they cared. I have never written a review before, and this experience was so bad, I felt inclined to share with others.
Fantastic! – When I was preparing for my pictures I was so nervous. I was really concerned about having to pick my own poses and not knowing what to expect. Once I got to the studio everything changed, I felt so comfortable. Gabriel tells you exactly what to do and help you all along the way. At the same time I felt free to throw in my own ideas and Gabriel incorporated what I said. I loved having my own input, and it was really easy to trust the professionals to make sure me look good. The session flew by so quickly and it was really fun. The pictures were amazing. My experience was awesome. Thanks.
Artful Eye – We purchased a gift certificate at one of our girl's school to have our family portrait made at Gabriel Tran Photography.
My girls had so much fun during our family session and they got to play with the rescued dogs that Gabriel had at his studio. Gabriel did an awsome job bringing out the best in each one of us and truly capturing our unique personalities. Gabriel has a natural talent to put his subjects at ease as well as a rare artful eye. We will treasure Gabriel's pictures for years to come.
Excellent Customer Service – Gabriel provided excellent customer service for me and our families. He was generous, prompt, and attentive to us. We really appreciate his photography and customer services.
Innovative Photographer – This place should be high on your list for your photography needs, if you want to capture special pose photograps. I had my family portraits done here and they turned out very classy... just perfect. It is a bit more expensive than the studios that are run out of department stores, but I liked the service so much that I would go here again before trying any place else.
Donated gift certificate beware!!!!!!!!!!!!1 – I bought the gift certificate for my wife for mothers day. We scheduled a time to do photos and he was late and wanted us to walk the park in 110 degree weather and according to the weather reports it was the hottest day ever in houston. He pressures you into buying photos since he has not told you that the gift certificate was a scam to get you there and he has taken the photos. I did not get what I paid for.
Great Photographer! – Mr Tran prepared a portrait for me with professionalism and artistry. His skill is superb, I have come to know him in other avenues as well (his efforts in animal adoptive placement and artist circles, for example) and find him to be an honest, caring, giving businessman Houston should be proud of.
Absolutely Pleased! – Gabriel has been our photographer for 6 years and it has been an honor working with him. He has taken both our family portraits as well as portraits of our extended families.
Gabriel has always shown professionalism and integrity. He has always conducted himself in a considerable manner by going above and beyond. Not only is he a professional in photography, but his gift is unique and original.
Everything that Gabriel has pledged to us has not only been met but has exceeded our expectations. He has completed our transactions from the beginning to the end of his commitment.
We have no hesitation recommending Gabriel Tran Photography because we know that you will be content and satisfied. Thank you Gabriel for the unforgettable and cherished photographs that will be treasured for a life time!
Fantastic Experience! – Gabriel not only runs a great business, but is a fantastic person to work with. The photos turn out beautifully, and although the cost was higher than we expected, it was worth every penny in the end. If you are looking for a photographer in the Houston and surrounding area, I highly recommend this service!
