Korean hot tofu at its best. Jang Guem Tofu house is my favorite restaurant in Houston for Korean hot tofu. Soft silken tofu soup in a steaming hot iron bowl with as much spice as you can handle is oh-so-good, I get cravings for it regularly. A bowl by itself will run you about $8, but get it in a combination with either the korean bbq beef (bulgogi) or korean bbq ribs (kalbi), and you have yourself a bona fide korean meal fit for a king (or queen).

I usually order the Kalbi combo with mushroom tofu mild. The service is pleasant and attentive. They bring out a little salad within minutes of seating, then bring you a tray full of little side dishes, like a small deep fried fish, kim-chi, pickled zucchini, seaweed, and much more. While I am munching on the side dishes, they'll usually bring out the steaming tofu. They usually have a raw egg on the side, and you can crack this egg right into the hot tofu and let it sit for a bit to cook. Then comes the sizzling Kalbi on a steel plate. I love the kalbi here. They are cut the right thickness (about 1/4 inch), and they are just the right size. You can tell they use quality meats because their meats are juicy and teeming with flavor. At the end of the meal, you can even serve yourself a free soft-serve ice cream cone from the ice cream machine that sits next to the door, a big plus with the kids!

Tips for Jang Guem Tofu House

February 17, 2010

Citysearch Editorial Review. Just one of the many restaurants in the continuously growing strip centers of Chinatown, the generic "Tofu House" signage of this Korean cafe does little to attract attention. But the interior's warm yellow wallpaper, adorned with lacquered tree branches, invites you to a comfortable meal. The specialty is tofu soup, which comes to the table bubbling out of its stone bowl, with a serving of rice, varying levels of spiciness and a massive quantity of replenishable sides including kimchee and a small fried fish. Quick servers whisk away empty dishes and are more than willing to help you decide between other menu items such as Korean barbecue platters and a fried seafood-and-green-onion pancake.
