What People Are Saying About Soma Sushi Restaurant & Bar

In Short – Inside the ultra-modern and Asian-influenced dining room, expect sushi, creative house rolls and sashimi offerings that parallel those of Azuma. Those in search of a rarefied Japanese dining experience should sample the menu items created by Chef Robert Gatsby (formerly of Noe) including the fish and chips (whole fried fish served with dipping sauces), crunchy noodle mango salad, lobster cocktail with seafood and caviar, and curried braised beef. Singles mingle over cocktails in the front bar area.

Editor's Tips

When to Go:
The restaurant is a lively Heights hangout on the weekends, with club music and groups of 30-somethings fueling up for a night on the town.
What to Drink:
Beer and wine are offered but the restaurant also has an extensive sake and specialty cocktail menu.
ambiance

  1. The hosts were so nice, and the bartenders were a lot of fun.
  2. The sushi is good and fresh but the atmosphere was even better.
  3. Let me say this about SOMA: The atmosphere is more pleasing than any other restaurant I have been to in my life.
  4. am in town on business and asked a colleague where to go for good sushi and a good atmosphere for a 30 something dining alone.
  5. Great atmosphere & really good food!
  6. The ambience is nice, place to see and be seen.
  7. The walk-up is horrible, but the inside atmosphere was nice and pretty (save for the screaming child they let in that sat at the bar), the wait-staff was attentive.
  8. The decor is actually pretty inviting.
  9. loved the Asian decor, esp.
  10. Besides the parking and the rude hostesses, the food and atmosphere was delightful.
  11. Living in Houston, I too hate valet parking, snotty hostesses, idiot waiters, uncleaniness, techno music while I eat, etc.....but on this particular occasion I didn't have to deal with any of that.
  12. I'll just start by saying my boyfriend and I ended our romantic evening here with a trip to Jack in the Box across the street.
  13. Anyways, the location is good.
  14. Night for a date (which is a great place to go, lots of people to watch, good drinks, and a DJ playing some jazzy tunes) the only thing that was an issue is the parking.
  15. Parking was quirky and tight, but we made it in and out ok thanks to the valet, but the location is so great for us - I guess next time we could walk if we want (and enjoy the sake too).
  16. loved the atmosphere--its a beautiful restaurant!
  17. The LIGHTING is so artistic, the seating is comfortable, the bar is such a neat set up, and I LOVE an exposed sushi area so you can spy on your chef.
  18. decent food, inexperienced wait staff, nice decor; however too much attention drawn to the ceiling.

  1. Not quite as bad, but still worth mentioning, I was brought a cold cappucino with my dessert.
  2. The bright side was that dessert was pretty good (especially the one with the lemon pie) but milk and cookies made no sense (again, Japanese?
  3. The crab cake appetizer was amazing, and then we had almost all sushi.

  4. The different dishes came out in perfect timing and the wines paired with each dish were exceptional.
  5. Night for a date (which is a great place to go, lots of people to watch, good drinks, and a DJ playing some jazzy tunes) the only thing that was an issue is the parking.
  6. also don't like a bar that doesn't have the one drink that I like to order.
  7. The walk-up is horrible, but the inside atmosphere was nice and pretty (save for the screaming child they let in that sat at the bar), the wait-staff was attentive.
  8. we finaly got our mediocre drinks.
  9. Its infusion of a wonderful sushi bar and the Franco-Japanese creations of chef Robert Gadsby are a perfect blend of casual dining and great food.
  10. At times, I have met with friends here, had some sushi and it was ok, meaning, it did not make me sick, the service was never good, and I would catch myself watching the girl behind the bar, smacking away at her gum as she swirls a drinks, or the burly yo
  11. The bar scene is full of the beautiful people in Houston.
  12. The LIGHTING is so artistic, the seating is comfortable, the bar is such a neat set up, and I LOVE an exposed sushi area so you can spy on your chef.

  13. The sushi we had was fresh and delicious.
  14. Ok, I came here the first week when service was off (paper menus, etc) but the staff was really helpful and the food we got was creatively flavorful and we left full.
  15. Soma provided a great birthday for me and two dozen friends or so last year, so I asked myself why get creative and go with a classic palm tree sushi server on westheimer, when I can go with a great experience again for this b-day.
  16. Its trendy, the sushi is GREAT and the prices are reasonable.
  17. The sushi wasn't anything special at all, and I don't believe my salmon and scallops was that fresh.

  25. just don't like expensive sushi that looks and tastes like cheap sushi.
  26. I've always liked scallops but the scallops under their hot dishes was so good we ordered 2.
  27. Don't look for interesting rolls here unless you like spicy mayo, which is in virtually every roll on the menu.
  28. There a lot of places like this in Houston where it really doesn't matter what the food tastes like or what kind of service you get as long as other "desirable" people are there.

  44. The first time we dined, the food was amazing.
  45. Sashimi was great and fresh!
  46. The Pear Endive salad looked really good, but one of the people who ordered it said it was like she was chewing sand the whole time.
  47. Seated promptly and service was great, food was great!
  48. There have been a few misses ( pear salad/soft shell crab) but I would rather dine on creative unique dishes that have a chance to wow me at any moment, then dine on the tried and true formula driven food of some of the other top chef's in houston).
  49. The sushi is good and fresh but the atmosphere was even better.

Americanized, lacked authenticity

by cinnamonred1

This restaurant is a mix of good and bad. The decor was eclectic, ambiance comfortable. The staff friendly. There was a lovely patio area with a fountain. The parking was very limited and valet coveted much of it. The menu is completely ala carte. There are no combo dishes where you can have a soup, salad, main dish or just a assorted selection of sashimi platters. The portions were very small, so one or two items still left you hungry. The raw sushi fish was tasteless. We has the Maguro, Masago and Salmon. The California rolls had no smelt egg, and Unagi rolls barely had any eel or sauce, no sesame seeds - both were bland and tiny. BLT was good but only had four on the plate. Seasonal tempura was ridiculously small (except for the giant broccoli stalk) with shrimp no bigger than a cashew and almost non-existant batter. The prices are very high for what they are presenting and we still were hungry when we left. I guess we paid for the neighborhood, instead of for the quality.

Great Food, Horrible service

by vixen06

I'm giving them a 2 start because the food is amazingly yummy but I could not believe how horrible their service was. Everyone was polite but it took forever to get drinks and for our dinner I thought they went to get the cow in Europe. We all finally had to say something! I think our waiter forgot to order! I could not wait to just pay my bill and leave because it was way past my bed time!! The place was not that packed either, it was on a Wednesday evening. I sure hope they work on that because it truly is a shame.

Love their sushi!

I love their happy hours. 1/2 off certain specialty rolls. My favorites are the Crazy Irishman & Red Devil. Even my non-sushi loving friends agree that those rolls are delicious. Also, the beef capascio is simply divine!

Soma on Washington: Worthless, expensive, uppity

by TopolOpinion

Attended a party at Soma last night. Where do I begin?...

I was a party of 15, the first six members of my party were seated and the waitress was more than persistent about taking the other chairs away. I explained to her that this was unacceptable. The remaining 9 people arrived and we began to order drinks. Some waited as long as 15 minutes before they were attended to for service.

The waitress then asked me, "Will everyone be paying with separate checks?" I responded with yes, to which she said, "Well... that's not our policy." Her tone could not be more condescending. Why would you ask me counterfeit to make a point? As a waitress your job is to provide the best experience possible for the patrons, fill their requests if reasonable and make sure the drinks and food arrive with accuracy and in a timely fashion.

She fulfilled none of these duties or responsibilities.

Onto the food: Let's be honest here folks, HEB has better sushi. They just do. We purchased the Relaxation and the gilled scallops. The scallops left something to be desired and the roll priced at $12 failed to live up to the first .50 cents on the dollar.

Our table was treated with no respect. We were presented with the moment of the check... The waitress kindly reminded us in perhaps the tackiest display of the evening that because we paid separately gratuity was not included. Thanks, we could see that when we received the bill!

The waitress then proceeded to tell our table that, "sometimes people just don't realize that and leave without paying the gratuity." Her behavior demonstrated an attitude of, "You've never eaten at an 'exclusive' restaurant before have you???"

So in closing, Soma failed on every level. The food was substandard, the service was an abomination, and my party felt like they were eating in a cave (turn some lights on!).

Don't waste your time, your money, or your goodwill. Save that for an establishment that will treat you and your guests with a little more respect. We went to Soma for a birthday party, the girl of the hour rushed off and had no interest of going out after.

The reason?... Had to be the sushi!
