“have been getting my hair cut and colored at Modern Salon since they first opened at their original location on Gulf Bank and am a very happy, satisfied customer.”
“so i decided i would just come back when i needed to color my hair bc i thought they had good coloring products.”
“After seeing the episode of Split Ends, the owner could learn a lot from his nephew and the really rude employee of his needs to be fired.”
“Everyone is friendly, great music, respected my input, and affordable prices.”
“Price is good, but not worth the frustration and the long wait in between processes.”
Neutral...Sort of. I have gone to this place a few times in the past and each time came out looking great. However I started going when I was in High School and the owner Long is a jerk. He use to make little rude comments and when I got older and decided to treat my mom to a full style and cut. It was late and I guess they were cleaning up but the stylist forgot about my mom under the dryer. I heard someone finally saying after over atleast a hour hey don't you need to get her out and the girl was like omg. I felt bad my moms hair was this wierdo brown with orange streaks. My mom said it was fine but they had damaged her hair and I could tell she did not like it . The price is great but I dont know if I should go again...
Upscale cut, color & blow dry for a budget price. Although the location is somewhat inconvenient, they do a great job for the price and give upscale service and style. Even the well-known national chains charge more, but don't offer the level of service or expertise. The quality of the color, cut, and style would cost at least $100 more at most Houston salons. The original location was small and had very long waits; however, the new salon on N Houston Rosslyn Rd is luxurious (unlike the old, original salon) and has many more stations and stylists. I've read some complaints about Long (the owner). He has always been very gracious to me and the other customers, and keeps up to date on styles and trends -- perhaps the few unhappy reviewer(s) misinterpreted his perspective and demeanor, or is/are generally angry (about something else unrelated to the salon). The reason that they are still in business and have opened another location is that they do a great job, especially for the reasonable price - which we all need in this economy! Also many of the employees have been at Modern Salon for a long time, so there is some consistency.
Really?...really?!.
This place might as well not take appointments. I made an appointment with the owner only to sit there one hour at which time I had to say something.
He wasn't even there!
So they wash my hair since I REMINDED them that I was there and was seated and told he was on the way. Uh Huh... He shows up eventually then proceeds to cut someone else's hair just like a previous reviewer I saw.
Someone reviewed "...everyone wants to be associated with the best".... Really?? Hmm, this place is away out from the heart of the city. Can we say, to avoid competition? Maybe. Seems to squeeze in as many people as they can to get the volume to pay for the other location opened after this one.
Let me tell you about "the best" in business. Reservations are that, to reserve a time. If you reserve at a restaurant you get service. Pretty simple concept right? Even a barber shop keeps their appointments.
The cuts are ok but the service is lacking. True high end salons keep their bookings.
terrific!. Ive tried many places in town and as luck would have it I found one of the best salons right near my home. Ive been going for many years and truly appreciate their knowledge and expertise. It is true that sometimes the wait can be long- everyone wants to be associated with the best- but its never for long and the results are worth it. Many of us wait to be seated in popular restaurants and clubs so this is no different. The owner cuts my hair and I never fail to get complements on it. He is the expert so why wouldnt I want him to do what he thinks is best? My experiences have always been positive and my little boy and boyfriend go there as well. i highly recommend the salon.
Avoid at all costs!!!. Terrible! My wife (who has gone several times) just took her friend to the salon today and they both came back in tears. My wife went in for a trim and left with an "A line" super short cut, despite asking for just a trim, then they charged her full price! Her friend went in for highlights and came out with dyed hair (against her wishes) and highlights and her forehead was dyed too!! Worst salon, DO NOT GO TO THEM IF YOU VALUE YOUR HAIR!!!
Arrogant Owner with NO respect for appointments.
had my hair done at this place several times. The first year or so, I left generous tips b/c the cuts very good. The wait, however, is very long (every time). I was hoping that they would eventually recognize that I was a frequent customer and eventually the wait times would decrease.
That was a mistake.
Long (the owner) does NOTcare that you wait. On my last visit, I made the appointment with Long himself. He was 1 hour late to show up. Then, he started cutting somebody else's hair first....which made him almost 2 hours late for me!!
Modern Salon: I don't care how good you think you are. Once you put your EGO before your customers, they will Stop offering you their business. There is just too much good salons in this city to deal w/ you. Eventually, people will stop coming to you. I, for one, will pay twice as much....just so that I don't have to deal with your arrogance again.
Looking for a new salon.
I've been going to the salon for a while and appreciate the prices and have had some good cuts and colors. However, I feel as they don't bother to listen to what I want. Previously I asked for subtle highlights and got bright blonde streaks. Last time no one even bothered to ask what I wanted. The owner's wife came over and tousled my hair for a second and told the colorist the color number to use on my hair (never acknowledged me, said hi to me or asked what color I wanted) When it came time to style, I was never asked how I wanted it styled (or even cut) and when she started flat ironing it, I had to tell her I didn't want it flat ironed. Will probably find a new place to go.
Pricing seems vague
THANK YOU MANNY!!!.
I have not been happy with my hair for the last 6 months. I’ve used numerous stylists in both Austin and Houston and unless I wanted to spend a small (sometimes large) fortune I felt I was stuck with just a ho-hum style. My hair is both curly and dry making it a bit more of a challenge to cut and color. I am ALWAYS apprehensive when trying a new salon. Not this time! From the moment I walked in the door I was very comfortable and totally confident that I would love the results. Manny was amazing and knew exactly what I needed. I met the owner of the salon but can not remember her name - she too was very sweet and involved with the stylists and customers. This did not come across as a first time client welcome but rather a normal attentiveness to detail and customer satisfaction. I will be scheduling my hair appointments around my trips to Houston. In any event I have found my salon and stylist!!! The facility was well designed and extremely clean. Added benefit: it only took 1 ½ hours for color, cut and style! My son (20) also had his hair cut as well. He too decided this place is second to none!!!
THANK YOU!

5 STARS: my husband & i value the skills & ambience. in 2008 i spotted a fabulous haircut & color on a young woman at an event--she readily shared that her stylist was Long (Owner). i made an appointment asap and was not disappointed. i would not go anywhere else if you paid me. i convinced my husband to try the salon and he's a devotee too now. Thao (Owner) is fabulous and shares oversight with Long--they are genuinely committed to their clients' hair and contentment. Thanks you guys!! See you in the new year...
Awful hair salon. I scheduled an appointment with someone specific. Instead of getting that girl, they gave me someone else, which I didn't know until after the fact. I brought in tons of pictures of the hair color I wanted. They did not offer to remove the hair dye that I had in my hair. They just said my hair dye was too dark, so I couldn't get it as light as I wanted, so I agreed on a brown, but I made it clear that I didn't want it streaky. The color came out brassy orange and extremely streaky. Don't trust them with coloring your hair. Also, the cut did not come out the way I wanted.
