Editorial Review for Open City – by Andrea Loera

In Short
Located in the gathering of restaurants and bars at 2416 Brazos, Open City stands out from the crowd with an unparalleled view of downtown from the trendy rooftop bar. The menu features upscale American comfort classics like meatloaf and mashed potatoes, chicken stew, gruyere mac and cheese, thick-cut pork chops and fresh fish. The modern dining room (which features late-night hours for the theater crowd) has an outdoor patio while the upstairs bar has a partially covered deck for rainy days.

I read a lot of the reviews posted here before going so I could see if the complaints were legit. It turns out they ALL are! The service is not horrible, but definitely subpar. Our party of 6 received 3 entrees and then the other 3 about 5 - 7 minutes later. The food is overpriced and tastes like it is prepared for a hospital patient with a restricted diet so we requested salt and pepper shakers. The server came back a few minutes later to ask if we were done with the shakers and then took them to another table so it obviously wasn't just us that had a problem with the food. Also, the drinks are not that good. They are a little on the sweet side. We got there at about 8 so the parking wasn't too bad, but I'm sure if you get there a little later parking will be a disaster. Save your time and money and go some place else.

Pros: None.

Cons: Food, drinks, service.

Where do I start with this place! The view is not that great! The building I live in downtown has a much better view!!! The menu was not that great so we ordered salads. They were soggy, very watery which detracted from the flavor. The drinks were way too sweet...as one friend described her drink "as tasting like a snow cone!" One of my friends martini glass was chipped. They ran out of trays to serve bread, so they put the stale, hard bread in a styrofoam container (like a take-away container with 1 side ripped off.) The service was not horribly bad, but it was not great. I would describe it as below average. (and for the finale...) IT STARTED TO RAIN SO WE GOT UP FROM OUR TABLE. WE WERE IN THE PROCESS OF PAYING THE BILL SO WE WERE STANDING AROUND LOOKING FOR OUR WAITRESS. THIS GUY COMES OUT OF NO WHERE AND SAYS I'LL TAKE THAT. (I GUEST HE WAS THE MANAGER.) ONCE WE FOLLOWED HIM TO THE BAR TO MAKE SURE HE WAS LEGIT AND THE BILL WAS PAID AND WE WALKED OUT, THE SAME GUY CHASES US AND CONFRONTS US ABOUT WHY WE DID NOT TIP THE WAITRESS. WE FOUND THAT ACTION TO BE EXTREMELY TACKY!!!!!!! (what type of place has management chase you down and argues with you about tipping...normally we would tip, but below average service, bad food, below average drinks doesn't deserve a tip!

Pros: NONE

Cons: BAD VIEW, BAD FOOD, BAD DRINKS, BELOW AVERAGE SERVICE
