Editorial Review for Catalan Food & Wine – by Joshua Hinsdale
The Scene
The duo behind Ibiza carry over creative menu pairings and accessible wines to Catalan. Dark cherry woods and stained cement enliven the mod dining room while hand-painted glass designs and chandeliers hang from the ceiling, adding a touch of whimsy. An occasional roaring flash of flames draws attention to the bustling open kitchen along the back wall. A brick wall and ceiling, in-set with hundreds of wine bottles creates a cozy and romantic alcove on the side farthest from the entrance.
The Food
With a menu inspired by Spain's Catalonia region, expect Chef Chris Shepherd to provide Spanish-based cuisine with a modern touch, in both small and large plates. Top choices include crisp pork belly with cane syrup, foie gras bonbons and braised lamb stuffed with peppers. Soups (available in shots), salads, inventive seafood entrees and pressed sandwiches round out the menu. For dessert, try the peanut butter and chocolate crisps served with vanilla ice cream.

I went with a friend also on Father's Day and had a great experience. Our server was very conscientious without being intrusive, making recommendations on wine and food. I didn't love everything, but the fried peppers and the pork belly was amazing. We went early in the evening so we didn't have to contend with noise or crowds, but I thought the atmosphere was lovely. Overall a great meal!

Given the previous reviews perhaps I went on an off night?!? In short, our server lacked a pulse offering us no recommendations or explanations of the menu. The cuisine was disappointing (bland at best). After two failed appetizers, and a bowl of luke-warm soup I opted to stick with a good old reliable cocktail and passed on an entrée; hence the previously stated “lack of recommendation”. The atmosphere provided the intrigue that you would expect from a trendy new who’s who, but lacked the character to establish long-term patronage. (Fizzle)
