Tips for The Maple Leaf Pub

everybody knows your name. I love the maple leaf my husband and I were there over the weekend to watch NHL playoffs, and we popped in last night with a group of friends. I love the friendly atmosphere it is definitely not like the other bars in midtown. Scott and the other staff rock they are always so friendly and really go out of their way to make you feel welcome. On busy nights you have to understand that you are not the only patron at the bar, and you may have to wait a few minutes for a drink, but that's the case at any bar when it's busy. The staff always seems to work very hard on busy nights to make sure eveyone gets taken care of. As for other reviews talking about the TV setup I really don't understand what they're talking about they have 5 very nice large plasma TVs and I've never had a problem seeing any TV when I've been there. I have to give kudos to the owners for making it such a relaxing comfortable friendly environment!

The service is so MUCH better now! Great job!. I've been to the Maple Leaf Pub several times because I'm a huge college hockey and NHL fan. On weekday nights when the bar isn't as packed, service is usually average. That is, if you are ready for a fresh drink/refill, you can either order one from the bar with minimal wait or catch the attention of a wandering staff and place your order. However, on any given weekend, all bets are off. First, the bar gets extremely packed. So, attempting to get the attention of someone behind the bar warrants the use of rescue flares. Next, the presence of any staff on the floor checking on the patrons is nearly non-existent. It's ashame, MLP is one of the few pubs in Houston that offers so many Canadian brews, yet it's very trying to just place order to get one. With more bar staff and waitresses, MLP would be much approved.

Updated: I spent much of the Stanley Cup Playoffs at the MLP and the service has clearly improved since my previous outings there. The bar staff was on top of their game and kept all of us hockey fans satisfied. Great job, MLP! Thanks for hosting a great NHL playoff season. See you next season!

I am sorry to hear that you have had problems getting a drink on occasion. We have recently lost a couple of key staff members and are currently working to properly staff up with the right people. Customer service has always been a priority for us and will continue to be into the future. Thank you for your feedback. Please check back in with us, because as I said, the problem will be remedied in the very near future.

i would not recommend to anyone I know. me and a few friends go out two to three times a month to try out different spots and thought that The Maple Leaf Pub looked like a good place to go. (well we were wrong) the atmospher of this place seemed really nice, there are board games to play and the staff seemed friendly enough. all was good untill we got ready to pay the tab and leave......... my friends boyfriend went to the bar to close us out and me and my friend went outside. when he came out he was pis*ed, the tab was $30 for 3 drinks and no they were'nt even top shelf. my friends boyfriend had a beer she had a s*x on the beach and I a long island ice tea or for better words a glass of ice water because thats what it tasted like. my friends drink was bearly biggiger than a shot, I know s*x on the beach can be either a shot or a drink but we asked for the drink and not the shot two sips and she was done. back to the tab... the blond at the bar charged us for each shot she put in the drink WTF? we were at a pub not the hilton. when we left I called the pub back and asked how much thier long islands were and i was told $7 when i told the man how much we were charged i didnt even have to tell him our name he already knew. Hmmm??? well he said he would refund the difference which was cool but why were we over charged in the first place dont this place train there employees befor the let them interact with the customers? was it because we didnt look like her average clintel ? or was it because she was running short on cash and needed some extra gas money????? who knows and who cares she knew what she was doing and it was not right if you dont fit this pubs " class of people " then i would not recommend it. would never go again.

Sorry for the mistake. I hope that the manager took care of the tab to your satisfaction. The bartender you are speaking of is in fact new. As we do not have a POS system, it is up to each individual bartender to correctly ring up drinks. It is absolutely her fault for not asking the manager on duty how to ring up the drink correctly. I am curious as to why the tab was not questioned while you were at the pub in order to resolve the issue on the spot. Nonetheless, it is our fault. We have recently lost a couple of key employees and are in the process of putting the right people in place. The Maple Leaf Pub is not like a lot of the other spots in Midtown. We don't strive to attract any certain "class of people". We don't care if you're in shorts and a T-shirt or shirt and tie. All that we ask from our patrons is that they be respectful and have a good time. If you will give us another try, I'm sure you will find things to be better.

DO not Go here.. BAD! BAD! BAD!.I, my boyfriend and a friend of ours went to the maple leaf on May 10. We just wanted to have a few drinks and relax. The place looked nice and we did like the atmosphere. My boyfriend ordered a beer which is the only drink you should order. I ordered a "S*x on the Beach" which the bartender must not have known how to make. She gave me a shot of a drink. You can google this drink (which I did before I wrote this) and see how the drink should be made. My friend got a long island ice tea and she said she didn't like it either. But you know what. We weren't really mad, we just didn't order any more and just hung out. We just thought this is not a place to order mix drinks from. No biggie. So all we ordered was one beer, and 2 mix drinks. My boyfriend went to go take care of the bill. It came up to $30. WTF? The bartender was charging for every item that was in the mixed drinks. The beer was $4.00 and my drink was may be $10.00 and the long island was $16.00. My boyfriend asked her if she was serious about the bill and she just smiled and said yes. He paid and said some words and left. My friend & I were in the parking lot waiting and he told us about it. We were really in shock. Part of us felt we just got suckered and maybe this happen because we didn't ask how much the drinks were gonna be before we orderd. My friend called the place up and asked how much was a long island. the guy who answer said $7.00 and then she told him we just left and were changed $30. He must have looked at the bill and said "oh , were are going to refund you $13.50. I do not believe this was a mistake and our checks were confused with someone elses. This bartender did this on purpose. Why were we singled out? We weren't drunk and acting stupid. She just really thought she could rip us off. Maybe pocket some of the money. I do know we were the only latinos there. But I don't want to play the race card. But just stating the fact. Do not go to this place.

Response to Htowncoog. I have not yet visited but I heard about this through another hockey fan and then read the review from Htowncoog. I now rate this place as a 5, I was planning on catching the Fri/Sat night playoff games but have been motivated to go tonight. You can watch the rockets at any bar or restaurant, people who have passion for the game of hockey need a place to enjoy a game, and I found it. I gained some serious respect from the response given. Look forward to the experience tonight.

Not a true sports bar - Other "onetime" reviewers probably employees or associated with owner.. I was there to watch the hometown Rockets play the Jazz in the playoffs and to my surprise when I got there, only one tv was tuned into the Rockets game and the rest were showing Dallas Hockey. Ok, I get it, this is a "canadian" bar so of course because it's a "canadians" bar, if they show anything else besides hockey it wouldn't be a "canadian" bar right? Those "canadians" must all be stereotypical one cell-brain creatures who can't appreciate anything besides hockey i take it *sarcasm*.

Let's get a few things straight. If you're going to proclaim yourself as a sports bar, the first and foremost thing you should do is put the local teams ahead of whatever gimmick you're trying to use to set yourself apart. To show DALLAS in a meaningless game on the main TV's and speakers when the Rockets are playing for their playoff survival is just dis-respectful to the hometown team. I suppose if the Texans or astros were in the playoffs, you'd show hockey too right? maybe it should have been a clue to you to put the rockets on the main screen when you saw most of the bar was watching and cheering for the rockets. (the two drunk guys with dallas jersey's don't count).

Let's get another thing straight. In reality, you only have 2 plasma TV's because only two are visible if you're not at the bar and hidden. the other side needs at least two more. Speaking of these plasma's, you might as well put up that old ugly console TV your parents had from the 80's because you aren't showing the games in HD. All you're doing is getting the standard 480i signal and stretching the picture. How hard is it to call up the cable or the dish people and tell them "hi, we have a "sports bar" and would like to have the HD receiver so our 'canadian' customers can enjoy their Dallas hockey in HD"?

Last, a 'canadian' bar should have more canadian beer on tap. This place has potential and the staff are nice, and the place is clean, but you can't dis the local teams.

1. We are a neighborhood pub that shows sports, not a ?sports bar?. 2. We are the only bar in town that caters to hockey fans. We proudly show NHL b/c we are committed to hockey & its fans. You can go into ANY bar to watch basketball. Would you go to a British pub & ask for soccer to be switched to Rocket Ball? 3. I?m sure the Dallas fans found their PLAYOFF game to be just as important as you found the Rockets game to be. 4. Are you seriously throwing insults at the intelligence of Canadians? 5. The TV placement & picture seem to satisfy most. 6. We have all available Canadian beers on tap and are constantly working with the distributors to get more (come on Molson Canadian). 7. I would like to point out that you have made 26 reviews, out of them 21 are average or less. What does it take for you to find joy? Even your highly recommended review of Bronx Bar is loaded with insults. All I know is it must be hard to go through life so bitter & to have the world be so disappointing.

Cool sports bar, especially for hockey. Cool sports bar. We went there last night to watch hockey. They have several flat-panel TVs mounted on the walls, several choices of draft beer as well as lots of bottled beer and mixed drinks. There are dart boards and a hockey game machine and some coin operated touch screens to play between events. I'll be back to the Maple Leaf Pub.

Thank you very much for your kind words. Although we don't serve food, there are many places close by that happily deliver to us. I know it's not quite the same, but it usually works out pretty well. See you soon.

Hockey-themed Midtown bar offers good drink specials, Saturday hockey night, darts, bubble hockey game and Canadian beers.. In Short
Open to the street, this casual neighborhood bar provides upscale professionals and Canadian expats a place to kick back and watch the game. Dark woods, beer signs, ample seating and suds on tap add to the pub atmosphere. Board games, darts and bubble hockey entertain patrons, as do the five big-screen plasma TVs tuned to the latest hockey games. The Maple Leaf also broadcasts NFL Sunday Ticket, college football, NBA games, and proudly supports the Houston Aeros. Free Wi-Fi.

All around GREAT pub. First and foremost, I have always received the best service from the bartenders at the Maple Leaf, particularly Curtis. He has only served me twice and I still remember his name. They are all attentive, prompt, friendly, and all around just memorable bartenders. The juke box RULES. It is a roomy bar with interesting, friendly patrons. Dart boards didn't hurt, either. However, I want my emphasis to remain on the service. I feel like it's the most determining factor no matter where you are. Let's put it this way- I will keep filling out applications until I get to work alongside those people!

Our main focus is always about customer service. We never want to be grouped together with some of the other midtown bars that might have a reputation of being not so friendly. If you ever feel we are slipping in this aspect, please let us know so that we can correct the problem. Once again, Thank You.
