Disappointing Service! I just want curls!. For my birthday celebration, I wanted to have my hair blown out to something fun and more glamorous than the norm. Because of the great reviews online, I opted to book an appointment for myself and my friend at Thairapy. I wasn't looking for anything over the top (my hair is naturally very straight/fine) but just lots of volume with wavy curls, etc.

Upon arriving to the salon, I met with my stylist Nicole. She greeted me upon arrival and seemed very nice. As she was shampooing me, I found out that she had been doing hair for 13 years (cut only) but was only at Thairapy for a couple of weeks. Still, 13 years was pretty impressive so I felt at ease.

As I sat down, she began asking me what I wanted to do with my hair, etc. As I began telling her what I wanted, (Issue #1) she immediately got discouraged and tells me that "she's not going to put curls in my hair because she knows in a few hours it will just fall out." Although I appreciate her concern, I was a bit taken back by this because although my hair IS fine, with the right amount of product, my hair WILL hold curl (I've done it many times before!)- so I know I was not asking her to perform any miracles. After going back and forth, (Issue #2) she's literally SO against putting curls and refuses to do it. From my standpoint, I appreciate her "looking out" for me, but, at the end of the day, I'm the customer and if I want curls- Give me curls!

As she's combing through my hair, (Issue #3) she then begins to take out her scissors and tells me "What you really need is about 2 inches taken off your hair at the ends... your hair is so damaged and dead at the ends that it really needs a cut." I'm no expert on social etiquette, but, being a first time client with her, I don't think outright insulting a customer was the best move. What made her comment even more frustrating is that I had JUST had a hair cut the PREVIOUS day from someone that has been cutting my hair for years and is a close family friend. As I explain this to her, she tells me that I really need to go back and have her fix it because she didnt do anything right.

She continues to comb my hair and with every snarl, (Issue #4) makes these noises combined with unnecessary facial expressions and looks at me and says "see... it's reallyyy damaged" while shaking her head. Uhhh hellooo... do you think ANY of the snarls had to do with the fact that you opted for no conditioner? Sigh.

(Issue #5) She dropped the f-bomb and "sh*t" during our conversation. I'm no saint but I did not find that appropriate for a first-meeting appointment.

Long story short: I ended up paying someone $35 to blow dry my hair, tease it minimally at the roots (which I do myself already) and load me up with unnecessary hairspray. I was very disappointed with Nicole's service and demeanor. The salon itself seemed very nice and is why I gave it 2 stars. My friend also really liked her hair- it was done by the owner- so I don't think everything about this place is necessarily bad.

Maybe Nicole can CUT hair well, but I would not recommend her based on my overall experience.

Umar = Hair Color Artistry!. I have been a hair client of Umar's since before his coming to Thairapy Salon and Spa, and I'm awestruck with what he can do with color enhancement for different hair types and textures. He's young (but so wise), gracious, very talented, and my friends I've recommended to him are still long-term regular clients of his! I also confidently recommend his personal hair and skin care line to anyone who wants to look and feel beautiful! ;)

Umar is the best!. Thairapy Salon & Spa is a great salon with a warm, friendly and professional atmosphere. I've been a client at this facility for a number of years. Umar is my stylist, and he is FANTASTIC! At each visit, Umar takes the time to hear my concerns and evaluate my present haircare needs. He is also a brilliant aesthetician who is well versed in skin care and hair care. He creates or modifies products to meet my unique needs a each visit. Then he takes time to educate me. I've been through different hair styles and colors with Umar's guidance. In short, Umar is da bomb!

UMAR knows beauty. Today was my best hair salon experience. Umar listened to and consulted with me on what I wanted. Then he walked me through step by step how to achieve it. He is very personable, makes great suggestions, very knowledgeable and talented in coloring, cut, style, and recommendation of products. And get this, he has his own line of makeup, skin/hair care products, and he does makeup. I mean, what does he not do? He made me feel so pampered and my hair is turned around 360 after a protein and deep conditioning. When I walked out, my hair is super healthy and glossy, and bouncy. A true professional salon experience. Excellent pricing and great products. You are so worth it, so go check it out!
