Overcrowded!!!.
Joy Yoga is fabulous because you can get yourself into a yoga class for a fraction of the price, and not so fabulous because everyone else in Houston is there as well. The classes are overcrowded to the point of comfortableness. I have been to classes where there are 15 people and you had all of the space you needed, especially if you fell out of a pose, but once the groupons come around there are so many people often times you dont even have the space to do you pose and if you happen to fall out you will take two or three people with you.
I agree with the previous review that most instructors do not show you how to do the poses, but some do. You just have to find the instructor that best suits you and Joy does have some great instructors...
If it were not for the overcrowding it would be a fabulous place to practice.
Mixed feelings about Joy Yoga.
The location is great, close to where I live, so I go to their classes occasionally. The good news is that they run great specials on Groupon every 6 months or so. Also, their Zumba class is very fun.
Now, for the bad. The yoga classes are extremely crowded. To the point where you can barely move. Most of the instructors are very nice people but not very helpful instructors.
First of all, for the most part they don't even show you the poses. Nor do they show you any modifications or correct you in any way. They just walk in and recite their speech. I am sorry but I could run a tape at home if that's what I wanted. So you are left hoping that some of the other people in the class know what they are doing and end up following them.
I have been to yoga classes where the instructors were far more attentive and the class sizes were more manageable.
Great spot!. I really like this place- great spacious studio with wonderful lighting. Staff is always pleasent and space is clean. The instructors are wonderful- alot of diveristy so try out a few classes to find the instructor that suits what you are looking for. Some people like relaxation, slow movement and stretching, some people want a strength building fast paced workout- so give it some time. I really enjoy the relaxation yoga on saturday mornings ....I strongly recommend you check this place out!
BEST yoga studio in Houston!. I went to Joy last Sunday for my very first class with them and have already been back twice! The atmosphere is great and supportive, it isn't awkward to go alone (as it can be at some studios), and they have a great selection of classes! They even have free mats available for class if you don't own one. You can register and pay for your classes online in advance (good for people who aren't motivated because if you already paid, you'll be much more likely to go!).
Best Yoga in Houston!. Joy yoga is a wonderful yoga studio for beginners or advanced! The location is perfect, and the staff and instructors are the most friendly around.
Best Yoga Studio in Houston. After visiting several yoga places and being disappointed by the studios and instructors, I was delighted to find Joy Yoga Center. The studio is beautiful with lots of windows that let in the natural light, hardwood floors, and fresh flowers. The staff is incredible. They encourage each student to reach his or her edge without being too aggressive. Joy, Marizol, and Mandy are especially gifted instructors who create very fun flow sequences to great music. Expect to be challenged and work up a sweat. In just a few short months, I have seen progress in my poses that I had not seen in my previous two years of practice. I look forward to continuing to develop and improve my practice and enjoy the company of the other men and women who visit Joy Yoga Center. Namaste!
Bliss Unplugged!!.
The Joy Yoga Center is truly that, a joy. Joy and her instructors provide a flowing, centered, nurturing approach. Every class is different and provides the individual the opportunity and tools to experience their practice as deeply as they choose to. Challenging, yet always supportive, the instructors are always their to provide individual attention even in large classes. Finally, a place that provides a balance between a purely physical experience and the relaxing more internal aspects of yoga.
In truly yogic style, it challenges your assumptions from the begining as it is located in a rather nondescript strip center. Once you enter you will find the facility is graceful, unassuming and inviting. Joy deserves her writeups as "Best Instructor". Go explore for yourself. Everyone could use more Joy in their lives.
OUTSTANDING yoga instructor!. What a great support to keep a relaxed attitude in this hectic world! Joy is sensitive to her individual students' needs, capabilities, and limitations. Classes are well organized and focused, but include individual attention. She knows her yoga, and keeps classes fun and challenging. The studio is very comfortable, away from congestion, and easy to reach from downtown. Joy Yoga gives more to keep me fit and stress-free than an other approach I've found -- absolute highest recommendation!
Best Yoga City!. Joy Yoga Center is the best kept yoga secret in this city! Joy's compassion and excellent instruction lead her students to discover strengths within ourselves we either buried long ago or never realized we had. The studio is gracefully understated, placing the focus internally which is really what yoga is about. Give yourself the gift of Joy Yoga. You will reap the benefits long after the experience!
Good attitude, but smells like my first apartment. Houston hasn't caught on to what makes a good and affordable yoga studio yet, so I was willing to give Joy some space to grow--ignoring the smell and the strip-center atmosphere (do strip centers prohibit incense?) Joy has become a little too exhibitionist for my taste (although some of her other instructers are great) AND she has raised her prices. Just not worth it for me anymore...I will have to keep looking.
