What People Are Saying About Yao Restaurant & Bar

In Short – Despite the enormous doorways and various photos of Yao playing basketball, the elegant dining room bares little resemblance to most sports-themed eateries. Tables are generously spaced for quiet conversation and décor is understated Asian. The adjacent lounge features a lustrous red and black color palette, ample booths and three big-screen televisions tuned to the latest game. The restaurant, run by Yao's parents (father Yao Zhiyuan and mother Fang Fengdi), serves familiar dishes including Peking duck, General Tso's chicken and Szechuan prawn.
BEST CHINESE CUISINE SINCE WE WERE IN SAN FRANCISCO
by plmpph
We were tired of the same old Chinese food in the Galleria area restaurants where we've gone for years and spent some time on line checking out reviews...found this listed overall as the best Chinese food in Texas.
One time there....and we believe it.
Best Chinese we've had since visiting our daughter in San Francisco for July 4th weekend (2009)
- Pros: FRESH FOOD, GREAT FLAVOR, SUPERB SERVICE
- Cons: Not as small and intimate as we would like.
Lots of hype -- but where's the beef?

Yao's was average food-wise. Yes, it's owned by a sports celebrity. So? The interior decor is quite average. If I shut my eyes, then opened them, I wouldn't even know I was in a Chinese restaurant. The decor is nondescript. Not a scintilla of Orientalia to be seen. No free tea. No free fortune cookies even! The service was excellent, the menu large. The food was okay. It was quite crowded for lunch. There's nothing memorable about the place. Yes, decent eats for a good price. That's it.
- Pros: Fast, efficient service
- Cons: Ho-hum in the food & decor departments
STEP ASIDE, P.F. CHANGS, YAO'S IS TAKING OVER
by samnicjack
YAO'S Is the best chinese food iv'e ever had, anywhere! The service is great and I would say it's speed is normal. But hey while you wait you can check out their world class bar. If mixed drinks are your thing try a GREEN MONKEY,but its a sneaky one. My favorite dish is the sezchaun pork with shrimp, it is the best iv'e ever had. The eggrolls are also one of a kind, they are packed with cabbage and chunks of chicken unlike most places that use shredded meat. The setting is so beautiful and unique, it would be perfect for any type of dinner. Overall I would have to give YAO'S 5 stars although, it would be nice to see YAO there...
- Pros: TASTE, TEMPERATURE, SETTING, SERVICE, STAFF
- Cons: NO CONS
