Prices are too high for the portions. Usually go to J Alexanders for lunch meetings, and generally the food is pretty good. Except for today. We decided to try something new. My companion and I ordered I ordered the vegetable plate. It was around $15 and we each got 4 strips of zucchini, 1 stalk of broccoli, 1/2 cup of green beans - all washed down in a slick coat of oil, and about 1/3 cup of squash). On top of that, they didn't even offer any croissants or bread with it...I felt like I was ripped off paying $34 (not including tip) for a few vegetables.
Freakin awesome. Just wanted to say that these people writing these reviews are idiots. If you know and enjoy great food and service, this is the place to go. Don't rely on these idiots that are used to dining at chilis and what can be considered the amateur diner at best.
Good food, bad service. Our small group of four went to JAlexanders for dinner. It was everyone's first visit to the restaurant. We were quickly seated. Restaurant seemed to be about 40% full. Orders were taken but the waiter seemed to be disappointed we didnt order wine. I say this because he came back and asked four times. We politely declined. Our ice teas arrived and another staff member came by to offer wine. We declined for the fifth time. This went on the rest of the meal. We left within the hour because it became such an annoyance. Do the waiter s get in trouble if they don't sell the wine? None of us care to go back again.
LOVE IT. I've visited this establishment on two occasions and was pleased both times. The ambiance is soothing and upscale. I enjoyed the dim lighting and jazz mucis. There were even roses in the bathrooms and on the tables each time i went. I enjoyed the Spinach dip. Overall, the food is well executed, service was great, and the atmosphere was very romantic. I've recommended this place to my mother and bestfriend, and the both loved it.
Chain restaurant known for its fine dining serves hardwood grilled steaks and baby back ribs in a romantic atmosphere..
Reminiscent of its former incarnation as a Houston's (including the largely unchanged décor), this nationwide restaurant chain popular for business lunches and an upscale casual atmosphere is perfectly suited to its Westchase locale. Expect a menu that includes the familiar hand-cut shoestring french fries, salads, burgers ground fresh daily in house, hearty sandwiches, butter-topped steaks and slow-roasted aged prime rib, seafood and daily fresh fish specials. The portions are Texas-sized.
No way am I going back!!!!. I have been going to J.Alexandra for years and to Houston's before that, once a week sometimes twice a week,. While eating my salad a month ago I found a piece of something the size of a dime it looked like a uncooked french fry. I was home a hour when I became very sick. I contacted the Restaurant to warn them and got nothing but grief. The manager Jason called me after I wrote the company a email, he apologized and asked me to come back in on him. A week later I went in with my family, my son spotted the long black hair before me.. Jason came over and I just asked for that salad to be taken off the bill since I only ate one bite, he wanted to comp the whole meal I said, no. Last week I went in with my family again. We where seated and drinks ordered, I asked for appetizers while the drink order was being taken...I asked for Ice Tea and all of a sudden a pad was waved in my face, what do you want to drink. OK,RUDE. We sat looking at our menu and drank all our beverages and still waited. I even asked a waitress if I could have my bill and she did not get the hint, so we waited some more. Finally the appetizers came menus still on the table and I said, I am ready to go, obviously we where forgotten. Jason was called over in a condescending tone *like what now* I told him we are leaving. He asked if he could take my order and I said, OK as soon as the order was taken I left and told them to box it up, leaving my husband to deal with them. Jason came back and finally realized how mad I was and apologized to my husband and again wanted to pay for our meal. My husband said no,but we won't be back. I never complained until some disturbing things happen to me all in one month. This restaurant needs some new restructuring, before they loose the rest of there loyal customers.
Boring, bland and a sad knock-off of Houston's. I have been to this restaurant twice and both times I have been underwhelmed. J. Alexander's is average at best from the food to the service. The food isn't terrible it just seems like a sad knock-off of the Houston's menu, which in my opinion is vastly superior. The first time I got some "special" Mac and Cheese dish as a side and the cheese was clumpy and gooey and was not special in any way except for the fact that I would not finish it which is a bad sign since I love mac and cheese. The second time I went, our waitress couldn't remember who got what entree. Granted there was 6 of us but I never have a problem at Houston's and I always go in groups. I agree the wait staff at Houston's can be a little snooty, but the Spinach-Artichoke Dip and French Fries make up for it. Speaking of French Fries, it seems like J. Alexander's stole Houston's "recipe" because they are extremely similar. Needless to say, this restaurant is quite unspectacular in every way. I want to fall asleep as soon as I sit down, everything is so bland and boring. I will make the drive to the original Houston's on Kirby instead, I just wish I didn't have to. J. Alexander's is a poor man's Houston's.
Slow service; unappetizing, overpriced food.
Service was very slow for a Sunday at 2pm. Our party had a eleven people in it. Nobody was happy with what they got. Food was bland, uninteresting, and overpriced. Basically the food was sandwiches, some pastas. My date and I paid $33 between the 2 of us. Refills were fast and plentiful. Fries were pretty good.
I will not go back to this place. I'm irritated at how much time we wasted waiting for such terrible food. I didn't even bother with ordering dessert, and I always get dessert. Nobody else wanted to stick around either.
The atmosphere was a little stuffy, more suited to business lunches.
Seriously, the more I think about how bland and unsatisfying the food was, and how much we paid for it, and how long we waited, the more irritated I get. Don't go to this place.
Taste of home. I was so excited when I saw this restuarant open here in Houston. When I would go home to Michigan I would make a special trip to this restaurant just for the french fries. You can't go wrong with anything on this menu. But some one at your table has to get the fries. They will let you substitute sides so have everyone get a different side and share. The portions are huge. This place is nice and romantic but can be just a casual place also. The chocolate cake is the best.
Very nice atmosphere, great food and service!. Great food , great atmosphere along with a nice selection of wine. Easy menu to select from, salads are excellent as are all the main courses that we have had. If you don't want to eat all of the generous portions, their happy to supply a doggy bag for the lighter diners! I highly recommend this restaurant, and I think it a step up above Houston's. Want to make sure your seated! Call ahead for reservations. You have to be good to make it as a restaurant in Houston, and they've got it made. You really can't beat the service. Overall prices are in line with Houston restaurants.
