Every inch of La Colombe d'Or evokes an air of royalty, from plush southern French furnishings and dining room to the walnut-paneled bar and library. This European-style establishment, built in 1923 by Humble Oil founder W.W. Fondren, has become a benchmark for luxury and sophistication. Each individually appointed suite has a king-size bed and private dining room, while the 2,000-square-foot penthouse also has a private dressing area and whirlpool.

My boyfriend and I dined here to celebrate Valentine's Day because of the recent article on MSN: "Top 10 Most Romantic restaurants in the U.S.". We were disappointed to find that we were being sat at a closed- in porch with a window unit air conditioner hanging from the doorway. The server was far from offering "fine dining" experiences for us. He was simply an order taker who had no interest in making our evening memorable. The server assistants were more attentive to us than our waiter. The restaurant was very quiet, which made conversation awkward. The only saving grace was that the food was excellent! Lobster Bisque was top notch! The experience certainly was not worth the $150 we paid for the two of us to dine.

My husband and I went to this restaurant to celebrate Valentine's Day. The waiter was impatient and rude. He behaved as if we were the ones to thank him for being at the restaurant. Unfortunately, the atmosphere did not change throughout the evening, the service continued inattentive and the food came cold. We were disappointed that a restaurant of that reputation was unable to deliver a good ambiance, and plates that were presented, and tasted, merely ordinary.
