What Our Expert Scouts Say

Japaneiro's Sushi Bistro & Latin Grill
April 25, 2013

Japaneiro's is a cuisine categorized by the uniting of Japanese and Latin. The freshness of Japanese cuisine mixed with the burst of flavors found in Latin cuisine is such a great match. Japaneiro's also offers a great happy hour. A few of their rolls are $7, cocktails and wine are $5 and beer starts at $2. Most of the food items are $5. Happy hour is from 3-6 p.m. every day. FYI...the Shrimp Dumplings served with their infamous peanut sauce are the best thing on the menu!

Fusion sushi works at this Zagat rated restaurant. 3 course prix fixe at lunch is a great way to try the food.

Great sushi. Great sushi with a large selection for those who don't sushi!

Love the sush everytime!

You can mix some latin flavor if you wanna and the spicy tuna, firecracker and fire in the hole are hot and tasty for those of us who can't get enough spicy in life.

No RESERVATIONS. I've been here before and it was eh.

I went again and it service was terrible.

My friends wanted to stop by here for Sat. for a party of 6 and they do not accept reservations-which means you just stand there and wait...and wait... so we did.

FAIL.

Overhyped. Over priced as well. Service wasn't bad, but not stellar. Of our table of four, one Latin dish was cold, one Latin dish had meat that needed a chain saw, one roll looked like a five year old rolled it, and my roll tasted so funny I only ate one piece and told the waiter to bring me some soup. I want to see the Town Center to do well, but places like this will have to step up their game.

innovation food. Japaneiro's is great!

The sushi was super fresh - the detail put into the rolls was creative and delicious. Their masterfully prepared Escolar melted like butter.

This is the best sushi/sashimi I've had in Houston!

The staff and manager Jason are all super friendly.

Japanese guy marries a Latin girl and they both cook!!. This is my favorite sushi place in Houston/Sugar Land.

Not only because their food is great, but also because of all the very different choices you have. Sushi, Latin food, salads, sandwiches, soups etc. It's great for a date or a night out with the kids. You can have a conversation and listen to nice Latin music at the same time. I have been going to Japaneiro's for about 8 yrs and I'm always happy. The menu changes from time to time to have new things, but keeps the old favorites- keep it up Japaneiro's!

The food is good, but the service isn't. First time I ate at the restaurant, no problems. It was a Saturday night, so it was busy, which was to be expected. The food was very good, so I returned in May 2010 to buy a gift certificate for a friend.

I didn't buy the gift certificate because of the horrible service I received the day I went back. The hostess told me to wait in the bar, which I did for I almost 10 minutes with my 2 young daughters. (I'm not sure why she didn't try to get someone for me b/c it wasn't busy.) The restaurant was less than half full, lots of empty tables, so the lunch crowd had already left. My daughters and I were the only people in the bar area. A man dressed in plain clothes walked through twice, but didn't acknowledge me. Then a woman walks up with a $50 bill and within minutes this man helps her, selling her 2 $25 gift certificates, then he walks away from the bar before I can even get his attention. I turn to the hostess who is watching the whole thing and ask, "Is this the bartender I've been waiting for?" She said, "Yes, would you like to speak to a manager." I said, "Please," and she returns with the same man. I was very surprised this person was the manager and that he had ignored me now 3 times. I began to explain how I had been waiting to make my purchase and he ignored me both times he came through the bar area to which he said, "I didn't ignore you. I smiled at your daughters twice. I thought you were waiting on a table." At this point I'm very annoyed because he didn't seem to care or take responsibility for not helping me. So I told him, "If you had asked me if I had been helped, you would have known I was here to buy a gift certificate. However, if this is the type of service you provide, I don't want my friends to come here." Then I left vowing to myself to never go back there.

Unfortunately, I had a meeting at Japaneiro's earlier this evening. I had decided I wasn't going to eat, but 3 others at my table were. The waitress came by to take the order and the first person ordered dumplings while the other 2 women were still looking at the menu. The waitress asked the person who ordered, "Is that all?" The lady answered, "Yes," meaning that was all she was ordering. The next woman began to order and the waitress walked away. We didn't see the waitress again until she delivered the dumplings at that point the other two people ordered.

After tonight's strange experience I believe the manager, wait staff and hostess don't understand customer service is important in food industry. Having great food is only part of it, if you don't offer good service people won't return. Oh and the same manager was there again tonight. I never saw him go around and check on tables. He mostly stood back where the servers pick up the food to deliver to tables.

Happenin' Place. We live over in Seabrook close to Kemah, so this was a venture out away from our traditional spots for dinner. We were awe-struck by the beauty of the First Colony Mall area, since we have no mall near this nice, out on the Gulf side of town. Japaneiro's was super busy on the Friday night we attended, so we sat in the bar area to wait for a table. The bar area was so nice, we decided to simply eat there at the chest-high tables. We tried two of the "Japarita" mixed drinks (Japaneiro's version of a Margarita). They were really delicious and decidedly quite "potent"! We followed this by getting the shrimp tempura, Kamakazi roll, and Hottate roll. The Hottate Maki roll had huge slices of scallops rolled in the middle of the red rice paper, and was really delicious. The Kamakazi roll was way too peppery and rolled too small for my taste; my fiance agreed. We followed our sushi sampling by ordering two "Pepito" latin-styled sandwiches; mine had tempura shrimp, while my fiance's had grilled chicken. They were both very good, but too dry; they should offer mayo or dressing of some kind with their Pepitos. The prices were reasonable, the restaurant was definitely a Happening Place with lots of people, buzz and excitement, and the waiters and hostesses were very attentive. With a little more attention to their sushi detail and some carpet on the floors and walls to absorb the extreme noise level, this could be a five star spot. Until then, I can only offer up three stars. But the atmosphere is definitely a "must try" if you're looking for a popular, buzzing spot in the SugarlandHouston area.

Easily our favorite place to eat.. We've eaten at Japaneiro's at least twice a month for years. The hardest part of eating there is not getting carried away ordering. Between my interest in trying new things and my husband's habit of ordering his favorites, we've ended up with a full meal's worth of leftovers on several occasions. It's honestly just about the only place I've NEVER had anything bad. Even dishes that aren't really my thing were still interesting to try and highly edible.

I was in the mood for something new, so I went for the Crudo Sampler on our most recent visit. The presentation was beautiful, almost like a floral arrangement made of sushi. And better than how it looked was how it tasted! I even ate the tamago, which I normally can't stand. Theirs was actually good, with a light delicate flavor I didn't expect from past experience.

The staff is always friendly and accommodating. They're knowledgeable about the menu and very helpful when you're not exactly sure what you want. Combined with the relaxed, friendly atmosphere, a trip to Japaneiro's is a bit like visiting family. My only real regret is I COULD have tried it months earlier, but I was intimidated by the idea of "fusion food". I'm so glad I let my curiosity win!
