You haven't had quiche until you've tasted the "better than your momma can make" quiche at Shade made with bacon, spinach, sun-dried tomatoes and cheddar cheese. You can order it at lunch and during their weekend brunch.
For the ladies who lunch, this is a perfect place to visit! Ok, even for those who aren't lunching ladies. I enjoyed a lovely Sauvignon blanc with one of their surprisingly reasonably priced salads. If its a nice day, request their hidden patio!
Refuel while shopping at this casual, yet elegant restaurant.
Great food...but customer service needs improvement – we have been going to shade for years....we have always enjoyed the food and had great servers about 95% of the time. we have always thought the restaurant was kid friendly for brunch as well. we have a child with food allergies and we specifically asked her brunch to be cooked a certain way...the food had one of her allergens in it and when we asked about it, we heard the manager tell our server...just tell them we cooked it the way they asked. he was snarky and rude and we could hear him too! he never came by the table nor spoke to us, instead our server apologized to us and was incredibly nice. we were enjoying our company immensely and probably overstayed our welcome at the table, so instead we got glares from the floor manager. depsite the good food, we won't be returning...ever.
Always Great – Everytime I've been I've never been disappointed. The atmosphere is cozy and the food is fantastic. Great job guys.
nice atmosphere but nothing ordinary – Tucked off of 19th street the restaurant is nice and comtemporary. Service was great and the server I had was attentive. The food wasnt anything outstanding. It reminded me of glass wall. If I were to have an event there I'd go back but other than that I wouldnt be there on my own.
Great Neighborhood Spot! – Being new to the Heights, I was delighted to find this wonderful "word of mouth" spot- I went Friday for lunch and was greeted and seated right away. Our waiter was helpful, kind (and not to mention, VERY tall and handsome...) and recommended we try the special Panko Crusted Salmon. I am not usually a fan of salmon, but the waiter reassured me it would be delicious- which it was! The decor was contemporary, yet soothing. At the end of the meal (with no room to spare) we were tempted to try a dessert. Our waiter claimed the coconut cream pie was his favorite, and it would surely be ours. At the end of the meal, were pleased with the food, and even more pleased with our server's guidance and hospitality. Thanks Shade!
pretty nice – this place has a nice atmosphere and the food is mostly good. i don't recommend the lamb but the vegetable plate and the chilean sea bass were very nice. the wine and the deserts were all good as well. the only downside i see is that the service could be better. the service wasn't bad, but for the price of the food, it could be a little better.
At one point outstanding - now just OK due to small portions – Update: We returned to Shade and found the service was good as usual. Previously we had tried the brunch, this time we ate from the dinner menu. Considering the ambiance (seems like a strip center-type restaurant) the prices are more expensive than reasonable. The bread was good, as was the food, but the portions were extremely small and I almost left feeling hungrey, were it not for another thick slice of bread. On the other hand, my wife's scallops were delicious. We rated this a five-star in 2008, now we give it a three-star. Oh... it took so long for the waiter to ask for our drink order, that we decided to order only water. Other than that, the service was good. We will not return.
2008: We arrived with BRUNCH reservations on a Sunday at Noon for our FIRST VISIT and were seated almost immediately. I would recommend reservations. The service was superior! We ordered the "soup trio", which was comprised of three varities of the daily soups. All were served hot and the taste was excellent. The salmon was on the level of the best that we have eaten. For an after-brunch beverage we had a latte and it was HOT - just like it is supposed to be, but many restaurants forget this. All in all, we will be back. Note: we were going to order the variety bread plate, but didn't because we had the soup appetizer. We noted that it looked very good on the table next to us.
Good drinks, fair service, and overpriced food – I recently moved to the Heights and have heard rave reviews about Shade, so I had a check it out. The drinks were great. The service however, was very awkward. The waiter would stand behind us and not ask if we needed anything, just stare over our shoulders until we called him over. It stressed me out. The food was subpar. I had the pork chop, which had a piece in it that I could not chew. My boyfriend had the beef tenderloin, which was nothing exciting. We both felt that we had over paid for our meals. For the price, there are much better restuarants in the Heights.
Wonderful - Dishes are Delicious and Always Imaginative/Never dissappoint – I have been frequenting this great restaurant in the Heights for about three years and I have never left mad, agitated, aggravated or any other disasterous feeling that a handful of reviews state. The food is amazing, always keeping the menu fresh and new. My personal favorite appetizer is the shrimp and grits appetizer - oh WOW! The pork dishes are great as are the chicken and Sunday Brunch is always delicious as well. The omelette currently on the menu is the absolute best I have ever had as far as combination of ingrediants including artichokes and peppers. The flavors really pop!
The staff IS attentive unless you are expecting them to sit in your lap or something. Not sure I understand the complaints of one of the last reviewers who timed everything through his or her dinner. How can one enjoy themselves by doing this? The staff at this restaurant are very good! They work together well and their manager is top notch. You can easily tell they work as a team.
Bottom line - great food, great service and maybe enjoy, sit back and RELAX and enjoy the atmosphere and food!
Still needs work after 4 years of service – I dined at Shade on Dec 26 and walked into a full restaurant. I made a reservation one week earlier and the hostess could not find it. To make it worse I was there to celebrate my fiancee's bithday.
The restaurant was modern with a great interior. Once at our table, waters were quickly placed on the table. It did take our waiter a while to drop off menus and take our order. However, our waiter was very familiar with the wine list. The selections of wine alone were greatly appreciated. Also, our waiter was very friendly and chatty. He told us Shade is 4 years old and they are always changing the menu.
We ordered two entrees and one appetizer. They were out of the polenta, very disappointing because there were only 5 or 6 entrees to choose from. The appetizer, fried shrimp with grits, was delicious. But, the runner dropped off the appetizer with a dirty spoon. Food was caked on the spoon from the previous user. Our entrees were more impressive on paper, than in my mouth. I was not overwhelmed with my pork chop. I enjoyed the cabbage and empanada more than the pork chop. My fiancee had the lamb and it was cooked properly, but it lacked in flavor.
best spot in the heights! – i just went to shade for the first time tonight and i am thrilled to say that it was better than all the reviews promised. definiely for "foodies", the menu was absolutely fresh and delicious and exquisitely prepared. the wine list was thorough, and the entrees were the best tasting food on this side of washington avenue. i had the vegetarian plate, which was the epitome of local produce, and my boyfriend called the pork tenderloin "perfection" - and believe me, he's picky when it comes to good food, in a good way. we will most certainly be back, and i highly recommend shade as a date destination or gathering point.
