Editorial Review for Shade – by Stuart Wade
The Scene
Picture windows and sparse, contemporary decor in olive and earthen hues make a refined impression. Fans of Houston's Daily Review restaurant will recognize creator and Chef Claire Smith's touch. Service is informal but informed. Up front, the granite bar area offers views of 19th Street's eclectic shops. The main dining room lends an air of simple sophistication.
The Food
Begin lunch with quiche of the day or Asian shrimp and pork toasts, breaded triangles served with shredded cucumber and peanuts. Appetizers include crab-stuffed squid, and grilled quail infused with hoisin sauce on stir-fried rice. The fried green tomato and bacon sandwich on homemade wheat bread is accompanied by a deviled egg. The flavorful smoked portobello-mushroom sandwich comes with mesh-thin gaufrette potatoes. For dinner, check out the pan-seared wasabi and cucumber-crusted red snapper. A double pork chop with tangerine sauce, pico de gallo and avocado relish is served on saffron rice.

Being new to the Heights, I was delighted to find this wonderful "word of mouth" spot- I went Friday for lunch and was greeted and seated right away. Our waiter was helpful, kind (and not to mention, VERY tall and handsome...) and recommended we try the special Panko Crusted Salmon. I am not usually a fan of salmon, but the waiter reassured me it would be delicious- which it was! The decor was contemporary, yet soothing. At the end of the meal (with no room to spare) we were tempted to try a dessert. Our waiter claimed the coconut cream pie was his favorite, and it would surely be ours. At the end of the meal, were pleased with the food, and even more pleased with our server's guidance and hospitality. Thanks Shade!
Pros: Great food, Great service
Cons: Parking

this place has a nice atmosphere and the food is mostly good. i don't recommend the lamb but the vegetable plate and the chilean sea bass were very nice. the wine and the deserts were all good as well. the only downside i see is that the service could be better. the service wasn't bad, but for the price of the food, it could be a little better.
