Editorial Review for Yia Yia Mary's – by Andrea Loera
The Scene
A welcoming and lively atmosphere awaits diners at this Galleria-area hot spot. A foyer and front bar make way to a spacious dining room decorated with blue checkered tablecloths and pictures of yia yia (grandma) Mary herself. TVs are plentiful and the ceilings high, but the noise level remains tolerable, even at peak times. Expect table service and not counter-area ordering as before.
The Food
The menu is accessible (it's still a Pappas restaurant after all), but remains true to its Greek roots. The appetizers (or mezes) are exceptional here, so opt for a sampler or order a few standouts like the salty caviar dip taramosalata, stuffed grape leaves and saganaki cheese flamed tableside. Simply seasoned and grilled lamb chops leave you wanting more. Gyros are another favorite here, in traditional lamb and beef with soft, handmade pita and crisp tzatziki sauce. Other options include souvlakis, moussaka casserole and a variety of shrimp and fish.

Insider Tips
What to DrinkThere's a surprising wine list including inexpensive carafes of Greek house wine. For an even more authentic experience, try a glass of retsina or ouzo.
The ExtrasFood can be ordered from the bulk to go menu and serves groups of up to 10. Allow 24 hours for large orders.
ParkingThe small parking lot and adjacent parking areas can be a little confusing. The restaurant provides a parking map at each table.

I love the food here. The best lemon roasted potatoes ever! Everything I've tried is good except for the hummus. Too much garlic and not authentic tasting. The chicken and beef is wonderful and love the Greek salad. I wish it was a little more high-end instead of the open cafeteria style. I would rather have a waiter the entire time instead of ordering and then going to my seat.
Pros: The potatoes and Greek salad
Cons: Atmosphere

Totally disappointed, have been wanting to stop in and just never had time. Sorry, i made the time today. Service was so so, food very bland and overpriced, salad was more like lettuce soup with the amount of dressing that was put on. Wont go back, and definately wont recommend.
Pros: Got a table fast
Cons: Bad service, overpriced, food is so so
