Not as good as they think they are.
I have always been a fan of this restaurant as I liked the decor and food and service were always good. You don't mind paying a bit extra if these things are good.
However, it seems they are now resting on their laurels and getting plain lazy. Service was real, real slow, even though the restaurant was pretty much empty and staff were just standing around chatting. Food is not as good as other japanese restaurants yet significantly more expense (the kobe beef hot stone was $18 and you got 8 small slivers of meat - for the same price you can get a 6oz NY strip!), the snapper was over cooked and the average sushi roll is $18!
The wine list is pretty basic, your usual run of the mill stuff, but all the vintages are not accurate. You order a 2005 and they try and palm you off with a 2007 for the same price. When I pointed this out they got all defensive and the manager was pretty rude with his excuses (note - not apologies).
So, after being an avid fan, I am now a cynic and won't be returning.
Best sushi in town!!!!!!!!!!!!. This restaurant shoots other Houston sushi joints out of the water. The fish is the freshest in town, hands down. The other thing that keeps me coming back for more & more is the garden salad. The vegetables are as fresh as the fish, & the light flavors are perfectly & delicately balanced in everything form the miso soup to the salad & any roll you order. Good service & drink options too. This place never disappoints!
Small Rolls, Poor Service. I took my family here when they came to visit me in Houston. The waitstaff was cold and aloof. They sat us next to a table of loud screaming idiots doing Sake bombs (when there were only 3 other tables filled in the entire restaurant). We waited forever to get drinks. When the overpriced rolls finally came out I was dissappointed and embarassed to see that they were small, poorly rolled, and did not have any fancy toppings or sauces (these were the 12-15 dollar rolls too). That tasted as poorly as they looked. Nothing special. I was embarassed and hungry when we left (but didn't want to waste anymore money on gross sushi). So we left and drove to Sushi King where we had a really good meal. I would recommend Sushi King, Fish, Sage 400, and Soma over this dinky little place anyday. Needless to say, I have not been nor will I ever be back to this restaurant.
Nothing Special. Resutaurant is very nice but service is horrible. Waited forever to have order taken and then waited another 15 minutes for drinks to be delivered. The sushi is fresh but way too overpriced. I think there are way better places for a lot cheaper!
Uptown Sushi.
This is the best sushi I have had anywhere!!! It is worth the wait! Fun bar but loud and very crowded.
Love the miso soup!!! Must have...
Ambience is beautiful!
Nothing to write home about. While they offer a great variety of sushi that always tastes fresh, it is not worth the experience as a whole. Service was lacking, cocktails were yummy but weak, and prices are a bit over the top. I love a hip sushi atmosphere but i couldn't even have a conversation with my date the noise level was so high. My only reason to return would be for the sushi and i can find the same elsewhere.
Fresh sushi, good martinis. Sushi is fresh and decently priced. The martinis are good, but not very strong. Make a reservation because the wait for walk-ins is LONG.
Not as Good as it used to be. I used to defend Uptown too anyone who said Azuma is better. I used to live across the street and eat here multiple times a week, didn't even mind the prices because the sushi was so good. However, the past few times I have been here I was extremely disappointed. Neither the rolls nor the sushi are as large as they used to be. The last time I was there, I ordered a spicy tuna hand roll, and it was sweet with a little spice, and VERY SMALL- not much tuna. The rib eye beef rolls are still excellent, but I can't help but wondering if they will be smaller the next time I go there...and if there is a next time, it will be because I am with a group of people who out vote me or I ABSOLUTELY CRAVE one of the rolls. There are much better places for sushi in Houston!!!
Best All-Around Sushi Experience. If you want to be spoiled with service, lubed with lucious martinis, and of course love to dine on decadent sushi - this is the place for you! I have been to Uptown Sushi several times and it is consistently impressing me with the exceptional service, sushi, and martinis. And not to mention, the "good scenery" - this place attracts the pretty people! And why not with the beautiful decor (imagine crisp white curtains and clean glass with dim lighting) - and of course the aforementioned great sushi and drinks. My recommendations are the top 3 listed items on the specialty roll menu - Don Roll, 7 1/2 Roll and Red Roll. These are THE BEST sushi rols I've ever had. And believe me, I'm no rookie - I've had my fair share of sushi - this was uniquely paired, presented brilliantly, and of course delicious. My hands-down favorite is the 7 1/2 Roll - a MUST eat! :) For your cocktail - you have many sakes to choose from, the regular cocktails, but what you really must see is their long list of unique martinis! My favorite is the Mango-tini - if you love mangos like me - you will feel like you are in heaven as this is like drinking pureed mango in a glass!! And if all the food and drinks aren't good enough - the service was impeccable. Go and see for yourself!
not sushi-ya. I was very disappoint and want our money back. I believe this is not "classic fusion" of sushi-ya, my business friend demanded to try. Owner, chef, feeling is "NOT JAPANESE". Maybe Chinese or Korean
