The Scene
Aquatic accents like jellyfish-inspired lighting and a stunning mother of pearl sushi bar add to the sleek, modern décor. A pulsing club soundtrack sets the tone for the trendy, upscale crowd. Consider the curious seating a yin and yang thing--soft, high-backed suede benches offset by unyielding plastic chairs.
The Food
Start with the highly addictive rib-eye beef rolls, thin slices of tender beef wrapped around avocados and sweet Japanese yams. East meets Gulf Coast with the egg roll prawns--shrimp battered in crushed fortune cookies with a tangy apricot salsa. Asian-inspired seafood and steak entrees hold their own against the sushi bar menu, highlights of which include the utterly decadent toro and escolar tuna flown in from Spain. For specialty rolls, try the Lickety Split--tuna and crawfish roll topped with spicy tuna, yellowtail, salmon and avocado. Cooked fish fans have the Millennium roll with peppercorn-seared tuna drizzled with ponzu and sesame oil.

I have always been a fan of this restaurant as I liked the decor and food and service were always good. You don't mind paying a bit extra if these things are good. However, it seems they are now resting on their laurels and getting plain lazy. Service was real, real slow, even though the restaurant was pretty much empty and staff were just standing around chatting. Food is not as good as other japanese restaurants yet significantly more expense (the kobe beef hot stone was $18 and you got 8 small slivers of meat - for the same price you can get a 6oz NY strip!), the snapper was over cooked and the average sushi roll is $18! The wine list is pretty basic, your usual run of the mill stuff, but all the vintages are not accurate. You order a 2005 and they try and palm you off with a 2007 for the same price. When I pointed this out they got all defensive and the manager was pretty rude with his excuses (note - not apologies). So, after being an avid fan, I am now a cynic and won't be returning.

This restaurant shoots other Houston sushi joints out of the water. The fish is the freshest in town, hands down. The other thing that keeps me coming back for more & more is the garden salad. The vegetables are as fresh as the fish, & the light flavors are perfectly & delicately balanced in everything form the miso soup to the salad & any roll you order. Good service & drink options too. This place never disappoints!

I took my family here when they came to visit me in Houston. The waitstaff was cold and aloof. They sat us next to a table of loud screaming idiots doing Sake bombs (when there were only 3 other tables filled in the entire restaurant). We waited forever to get drinks. When the overpriced rolls finally came out I was dissappointed and embarassed to see that they were small, poorly rolled, and did not have any fancy toppings or sauces (these were the 12-15 dollar rolls too). That tasted as poorly as they looked. Nothing special. I was embarassed and hungry when we left (but didn't want to waste anymore money on gross sushi). So we left and drove to Sushi King where we had a really good meal. I would recommend Sushi King, Fish, Sage 400, and Soma over this dinky little place anyday. Needless to say, I have not been nor will I ever be back to this restaurant.
