Bad Karma and customer service – I am a 50 yr old woman who have had natural hair for 5 years now. When I walked into UFD I felt welcomed by the young man up front. I was informed I had to pay in cash upfront for my service and I did not mind. I will pay for good service and love supporting our young businesses.
On the day of my appt I arrived 10 minutes early to find the shop still closed. I waited for approx. 20 minutes and the owners finally arrived. First mistake making an early appt. Then the attitude was as if I did something wrong as I asked questions about techniques and caring for my style. Unfortunately I had already paid for the service. Second mistake. Last the style was poorly done and the sew in started coming out the next day. They did inform me that if I had any problems to give them a call. After over $400 wasted I had no plans of giving them another chance. After taking the style out I had breakage because the young lady braided my hair very tight while it was still wet without detangling.
I hate to give neg reviews but please be careful if you go there. Try an inexpensive service first to see if you like the atmosphere. Paying upfront for bad service is wasteful and any business that require 100 percent upfront cant be too confident in their own business. Can someone recommend any other natural hair care business in Houston. Still Looking.
Spreading the Word about My New Funky Love – A lady walked up to me in HEB and asked me which products I was using on my hair. It caught me off guard at first, but as I diverted my attention from the fresh broccoli, I turned to see a sister with a lion's mane worth of curly hair. All I could say was, wow, I should be asking you! She told me, she gets her hair done at Uncle Funky's Daughter and that she uses their products Good Hair and Supercurl. My attention totally away from dinner now, I thank my lioness angel and made a note to get on over to that Uncle Funky's Daughter asap. (What a funny name!)
I didn't get over there until Saturday at 1:00 pm an found a line of kinky and curly heads waiting in line for products. I stood my ground and watched in amazement. I had found -- KINKY HAIR HEAVEN! I spoke with Ray, one of the owners about my hair being so dry I was afraid the Houston sun was going to set it ablaze. We laughed a bit and he proceeded to tell me about Extra Butter. (Another funny name) His wife, Tonya, was actually using this angel sent cream on her client and invited me in for a look see. (I love her by the way!) She explained my texture and curl pattern which had been puzzling the heck out of me during this natural journey and explained that I needed to twist or braid my hair to get some curly/wavy texture to it. I thought going natural meant I could just wash it and go curly---nah, wash and go kinky is me. She tried a little Extra butter on my hair and I was sold--bought two, one for the sister. We both swear by the products. I can't believe this company is from my city! I have been telling everybody and now I am the angel that walks up to people in the grocery store. Get over to Uncle Funky's and get some of that funk!
Don't believe the hype – UFD is not a sanctuary at all. The negative things people say here are true. I went to UFD despite a recommendation NOT to go. What can I say? I have natural hair (I'm Black) and there aren't that many "true natural" options in Houston.
Paying up front in FULL for your hair services becuase it guarantees that time slot ONLY for you is a joke. They term it as a "deposit" -- but have you ever gone to a place where the deposit is the WHOLE amount? In a service economy, you pay for services AFTER they have been rendered. If you don't like the way things turn out, you can withhold your payment until things are done right. You can't do that there. Further, you have to bring CASH.
They make a big deal about how your payment locks in your appointment, how the time slot is only for you, how you will LOSE your deposit if you have to cancel/make other arrangements, etc. My doctor's office isn't even that strict . People have real life issues. I doubt very seriously that they wouldn't be able to fill the slot of a cancelled appointment given that natural hair is such a niche market (in Houston).
Despite my reservations, I made my appointment, paid all my money and I punctually arrived on appointment day. In case you're wondering, yes, I had to wait. So I guess this means that the lady ahead of me locked in her time and mine too? Cause she was still sitting in "my" seat when I got there.
Everyone has a bad day. -- I'm not so hard on people. BUT, in my humble opinion, the standards that they put in place were at my expense. If I can't be off my game as a customer -- needing to pay up front, be punctual, unable to cancel my appointment without losing ALL my money, then should be on their game too.
There is a facade of cool, neo-soul funkiness. Observing the salon activities and the sourness of my hair service provider, I confirmed for myself that the atmosphere they create is venire for poor customer service and "ok" hair services.
I wanted to support the UFD salon -- small Black-owned business, smart creative, entreprenuerial professionals. However, sometimes we have to see beyond what we want to see and look at what's really there: smart, creative, entreprenuerial UNPROFESSIONAL people.
I've done my homework and since found other places to get my natural hair done for less money, less time, and it looks GREAT. Do the same.
Hair Care w/Funk – It was great to find a hair care specialist that was not a salon or a boutique for a man. I found Uncle Funky's after it was recommended that I visit for a free consultation by my friend provided by the Uncle Funky's staff. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it was more than a hair care place, with it's music, style, soul, and funk deeply ingrained in the establishment. From the clothes, to the workers, to the stylists, the store had its own way of doing things. I liked that natural spirit that it showed me. It also offered me a chance to step away from those harmful products that I was putting in my dreadlocks and enlightened me about other all-natural alternatives to the chemicals I was actually killing my hair with. The professional stylist gave me tips and tricks to keeping my dreadlocks looking good and staying healthy and even provided a free style to them after twisting them. They really are the best at what they do. Make sure you schedule your next appointment before you leave, their schedule seems to fill up fast!
Lack of customer service and unfriendly – I went to this salon twice and was very disappointed both times. One of the owners of the shop (the guy who normally greets you at the front desk) is always extremely helpful and friendly. However, his wife named Tonya (the actually hair stylist) is the complete opposite. She doesn't know how to smile, she is not informative at all and appears to be very agitated when questioned about their processes and/or techniques.
Before going to the shop, I was warned by several of my friends who are natural and have visited the shop on different occasions. They all shared the same sentiment about Tonya, but I proceeded pass go anyway and left highly disappointed. I will never go again and will be very vocal about my experience.
Best Curly Hair Products Period! – Ray and Tonya are gems. They have a wonderful product line that actually works and they take the time to really educate customers on which products work best on your hair. Recommend them totally.
IT WAS JUST LIKE HOME!! – i admit some things about the place could use a little more bend or organizing such as the whole apointment thing and deposits but the apointment thing is only because i think they have limited stylist right now WHICH ARE GREAT one colored my hair and on maintenanced it in the same day 3 hrs total VERY COZT NO LOUD KIdS RUNNING AROUND, just a normal place and for some of the other review i dont think they are trying to appeal to white crwods this is a natural hair place darling why in the hell would they want to give white people dreads but anyway GREAT PLACE WILL BE GOING AGAIN !!
Simply the Best – Everyone knows that Uncle Funky's Daughter is one of the best, most professional natural hair salons in Houston. I travel quite a bit but I always fly in to get my hair service at Uncle Funky?s. The owners and staff are well-respected, friendly and have always provided exceptional service to many, very satisfied clients -- present company included. It is unfortunate that some people spend time writing bogus comments about the owner with an attempt to defame the business while at the same time--coincidentally listing the phone number to their "new" salon that has exceptional service. There is a ?best salon ever? type salon out there for everybody, and as human beings we should love ourselves and each other enough to provide feedback so we can collectively be better instead of discouraging potential business. I have been going to Uncle Funky's Daughter for the past 3 years and have witnessed so many consultations that I am sure I can do one myself. During the consultation clients are given ample information on how to schedule appointments, deposits required and the salon policies. It is unfortunate that the person who wrote the negative comment below did not listen to nor READ the bold, plain text lettering that is on their services menu.
What their clients know about the salon is that it is a sanctuary, if you will. A safe haven from people soliciting your business for this product or that product; a zen zone from the common salon yelling, gossiping and horseplay; and it offers complete and total privacy and protection for its customers.
I play professional sports and I welcome this place where I can relax?shy of any autograph signing, have great conversation, watch a movie or ESPN and know that "the guy" at the front won't just allow any and everyone to enter the salon if they are not being serviced. I don?t need to see a photo of myself on any blog or myspace fresh out of the shampoo bowl. So, here's to "the guy" at the front...good looking out.
Good location , Bad Attitude – I like the location and the funky clothes they have but not their attitude. While I was getting my two strand twists done ,(which I didn't like )my husband tried to come in the back to check if I needed anything while waiting but the gentlemen that works there, (I believe he is one of the owners,) rudely told my husband that he couldn't come to the back not even for a second. My husband told him he was just going to check up on me for two seconds but they still refused. We were in shock!!! I understand every business have their policies but it can be done in a nice way.
I found a much nicer and welcome salon- its called Natural Resources 713-528-7102
I'm in love with Uncle Funky's Daughter – I love this place! I found it online and decided to try it for myself. I scheduled a consultation, met the owners Tonya and Ray, and scheduled an appointment for loc maintenance. Not only did she use their amazing products on my hair, she gave me a complimentary style since I mentioned I never style my hair!
I moved here from Chicago and was hoping to find a little bit of home here in Houston, but before Uncle Funky's, it was a challenge. While I was there, the store was extremely packed and several natural sisters came in for consultations and I was impressed at how much of a multi-tasker Tonya was. A family from Dubai came in to purchase products and wanted to take pictures with Tonya which I thought was waaay cool. I didn't realize curly hair was common in Middle Eastern culture but the customer said it is and her sister swears by their products.
After the family bought about a gazillion products, another one of the ladies that came in for the consultation commented that she was glad she came in and that's when I told her, I was too considering people had posted negativity on their reviews. I made it a point that I would share with the world my wonderful experience at Uncle Funky's Daughter. I applaud you Tonya and Ray. Keep doing your thing! You must be doing something right, you are getting love from around the globe. I Love the service, love the products and love the people.
