Wonderful deck out back, great BLT

by Mai Pham , Citysearch Contributor

I usually take the drive through at the Beck’s Prime on Hwy 6 when I’m on my way home from a workout and need a quick infusion of carbs. On these occasions, my order of choice is one of their grilled chicken sandwiches, served on a wheat bun with some lettuce, tomato & mayo, giving a semblance of healthy. On days when I’m in the mood for something tasty and have an excuse for a calorie splurge, I order the BLT with avocado. Served on a toasted sesame bun with an extremely generous helping of bacon, creamy avocado, lettuce, tomato, and mayo, this BLT could be the poster child for high end fast food - which is what you get when you go to Beck’s Prime. Part diner, part fast food, Beck’s Prime is like a Texas style Johnny Rocket’s diner cum burger joint. It can’t be called fast food (think Jack in the Box or McDonald’s) and it isn’t a traditional diner with servers either. And the menu reads like a restaurant menu, with dinner steak plates ($20+) & most sandwiches in the $7+ range. So it’s high-end, and you will generally be spending somewhere in the range of $25 if you both order a burger, fries, and a drink. But there is quality in that $25. I’ve had BLT’s at many traditional restaurants and sit-down diners that aren’t half as good as the one I can get at Beck’s Prime drive-through. And even when I drive through, I know that they prepare each order fresh after you order, ensuring that your order is piping hot and fresh.

And if you happen to eat in? I was extremely surprised to find a lovely, cool, sprawling wooden deck out back, built right around large shady trees, overlooking the man-made waterway with tinkly water feature. On a 90+degree afternoon, the deck was tranquil, fairly cool and comfortable, all things considered. I spotted ducks, cranes, and pigeons as well as a winding walkway surrounding the waterway and was thinking it would be a great place for a family to have a low key meal, or a nice cheap date.

  • Pros: Food is prepared after you order, so it's always hot/fresh
  • Cons: Expect to spend more than $20 on meal for two

Never Again

by lonestarstate99

Just ate here and was truly disappointed. $30.00 for two burgers fries and tea. Fries were greasy and overcooked, burger was so overcooked that it was black and hard on the outside. Between the bad food and the bad atmosphere (a kid having a melt down at the table next to us that lasted 15 minutes) I think I will go elsewhere. Fudrucker's is right up the road.

Always the best-Night or day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by cornhuskers

My brother and his family live out by this store! We love the great lake on the property! You forget you are in the city! I have been frequenting Becks Prime Dairy Ashford for many years. I have eaten pretty much everything on their menu! I understand the quality of food and service I receive. They never let me down. We love their prime time dinners. We get a top quality steak with a generous side item and a salad for a little over 20 dollars. I don't have to leave a tip like at those snooty restaurants. I would recommend Becks Prime to anyone looking for high quality fresh food in a beautiful environment . Drive through one of their take out windows and you feel like you are on a nature trail. This company does not skimp or short change you in anyway. I work in the area and eat at this location along with all the other energy corridor employees a few times a week. I can get a fresh salad or the world's best burger! I will meet my wife or family for a peaceful dinner out on the spacious deck. Always a good time. My wife and I especially love the fresh grilled vegetables! WOW! Go to any of the big oil companies in west Houston and ask anybody at random what is their favorite restaurant in town and the overwhelming response would be Becks Prime. I have even seen our trading operations get food delivered for as many as 100 people so they don't miss a beat of the market activity. I guess I'll quit rambling on! I just love this place!!!! Look for me and my buddies almost anyday of the week! We'll be the smiling group on the first table of the shaded upper deck! Say hi!

  • Pros: Service, Food quality, Variety, environmentally freindly design, Healthful choices, huge portions, great value
  • Cons: All good

$22 for a steak at a burger join? Need I say more?

by LarryBrown

TWENTY TWO DOLLARS??? For a six-ounce steak? You've got to be joking me. I walked in to get a steak and was shocked at the price. Because I was in a jam I ordered a filet meal and a filet to go to take home to my wife. My bill was $40. For two people. At a dump of a restaurant that looks like a refurbished James Coney Island. The manager there did his best to sell me on the restaurant. "I promise you are going to like it. It's worth every penny" he assured me. I assured him that unless he delivered 2 pounds of tenderloin, 20 pounds of potatoes, and 5 gallons of milk that it would most assuredly not be worth it. But instead I got 3/4 lb of beef, one potato, and a little shredded cheese. Not by the most extreme stretch of the imagination is that "worth it." What on earth are they thinking? For that price I could eat at Houston's, The Ruggles Grill, or even Pappa Brothers Steakhouse, and even they must realize that those are far nicer restaurants, if you can even call ?Becks Prime? a restaurant.

They have been in business a long time, so they are doing something right. Other menu items are reasonably priced. I wonder how many of those tenderloins they sell in a month. I must give them some respect for having the nerve to rip people off like that, I guess if I could figure out a way to perform that kind of robbery, well, I'd do it too. That is, if I had no morals. Even though they are not holding a gun on anyone, what they are doing there is a crime.

On top of all that, our $22 ?medium well? tenderloins were raw. I mean really rare. This place is a burger joint with gross delusions of grandeur.

You know what?s good about this modern age of internet? I don?t have to take that backside reaming sitting down. I can fire off reviews of my own to Sidewalk.

Their Jamocha milkshake is really good, almost as good as Arby?s. Only at three times the price. I wonder if Arby?s has ?Jamocha? trademarked. I?ll drop them a line and clue them in to that.

  • Pros: They have tenderloin
  • Cons: Prepare to be raped

Best Burger Anywhere!

by the_case

This is the one place in Houston you can count on for a fantastic burger! They've got everything you can ask for --- great charbroiled taste, fresh vegetables, and great fresh-cut fries. And LOTS of them. I can go to any Houston location anytime when I'm visiting from Dallas, and it's consistently good every time. They may be a bit pricy, but I'm willing to shell out any amount of money, and it's always a good deal at Becks Prime. These burgers are better than most places I go to in Dallas, and that's saying something! All I'll ask now is 'Can you please build one in Galveston and maybe just one in Dallas?'

  • Pros: Clean and comfortable, Great Charbroiled Taste
  • Cons: None so far
