Great Hidden Gem.
We had lunch today at a great little gem of a place that I have driven by for years. Nundini is a throwback to how most places used to be in the inner city neighborhoods. Though they have a small menu, you get a great bang for your buck!
They have a good selection of panini sandwiches made to order that are easily split between 2 people. They also offer a selection of salads and have a special of the day. The locally owned place also has a fairly large selection of desserts from Italian pastries to their daily handmade gelato and sorbetto of which they offer many tasty flavors. Yo can also select a variety of glass bottled softdrinks, waters and other selections as well as wine by the glass or the bottle.
In addition to the great food, they also are a small deli where you can purchae fresh meats/cheese, pasta, olive oil & really neat selection of flavored sea salts.
Great down-home family atmostphere and a place where I'll do my shopping next time for some authentic Italian cooking ingredients, too.

Hidden treasure.
Nundini's is the kind of place you'd normally pass right by, as it looks like nothing more than a warehouse from the street. They've finally put some chairs and tables out onto their little front porch, though.
Yes, it's a wholesalers, but they also have fantastic sandwiches and gelato. I mean, way better than any other gelato I've had in this city. And the meat in their sandwiches is heavenly. I've never had better soppressato, salami or proscuitto - and that's saying a lot in Houston.
Every day they have a lunch special - panini w/ that day's meat, chips, and an iced tea for a very low price. You'll probably buy some other Italian delicacies there, too, since everything is so reasonably priced. But don't forget to try some gelato before you leave!
Tip: They're only open M - F, so get over there during the week!

Wow!.
I had read about this place in Houston Press. It is actually a store front for the wholesale operation. I specifically stopped to get some cannoli, which is actually very hard to find in Houston considering the number of Italian restaurants. In the pastry dispaly, there was cannoli already made but the girl made my order of 3 fresh. While I waiting, I tried a sample of the hazelnut gelato, which was heavenly! Very dense and creamy but not an overpowering taste of hazelnut like some gelatos and ice creams. Just right!
What really impressed me is that the girl took the time to scrape off the air dried top layer of the gelato before giving me a sample.
Next time I plan on trying one of their pannini sandwiches. Also have a deli of italian cheeses and meats with very reasonable prices.
