Editorial Review for South Padre Island Beaches – by Maura York

Overview
White sand and turquoise-blue surf aren't commonly associated with Texas, but they define this tiny (it's 34 miles long, and a half-mile at its widest point) island at the Lone Star State's southernmost tip. Laguna Madre Bay laps South Padre's western shore, and the warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico roll in on the east. A temperature of 70 degrees or higher most months keeps the beaches packed well before and after the summer schedule of other vacation spots.

Features
Renowned for massive spring break crowds, South Padre Island's beaches have also become popular year-round destinations for families and retirees. The dunes and grassy areas are gaining increasing notoriety among birding enthusiasts and sand-castle artists, and the island is emerging as a top spot for windsurfing. Many companies rent equipment for fishing, parasailing, jet-skiing and other water sports along both bay and gulf beaches.

Insider Tips

Look Good

There are literally hundreds of beachfront rental units along the Gulf of Mexico and Laguna Madre Bay--don't settle for less when making lodging arrangements.

Save Money

While beach access is free around most hotels, there are areas that require a nominal fee (but also offer amenities like on-site parking, picnic facilities and kids' play areas): Andy Bowie Park on the island's north end and Isla Blanca Park on the south.

Know Before You Go

South Padre Island is about 290 miles from San Antonio, and less than 375 from Austin or Houston.

5 Star Rating: Highly Recommended

My husband and I got married on the beach of South Padre Island. It was beautiful! We went in January and the weather was cool (warning so was the water! Burrrrr).and not many people on the beaches, so our wedding was private. Judith with Weddings by the Sea is wonderful and she helps brides-to-be with all the planning for a beach wedding. SPI is easy to get around on and everything is on the main street. Highly recommend Louies Backyard, it has the best grilled shrimp! Just a word of caution: in the off season, every restaurant and the one major grocery store close around 8 or 9 and the only place to get anything to eat is the quick shop. The Bay offers wonderful sunsets, and dont forget the amazing beach. It is like being in paradise! I can not wait to return to SPI for future visits.

Pros: Great People, Housing great to see, Food great!

Cons: January was cool
