What People Are Saying About Jenni's Noodle House

The Scene
Hard to say which is more alluring: the jaw-droppingly cheap prices or the winking, witty atmosphere. In either case, this unassuming Vietnamese-American establishment on the edge of Chinatown is a darling with the bohemian set from Montrose, Midtown and the universities. Plastic flamingoes decorate the entrance of the frugal dining room, which is dolled-up with a few Asian artifacts and a sign that reads "Dude, Where's My Noodle?" Friday is Boa Night--feathery accessorizing encouraged.

The Food
None of that campy attitude would go over if it weren't for the expertly prepared Vietnamese food at remarkably reasonable rates. The menu's three categories--Deals, Steals and $8 Meals--sums it up. At $6, a bracing order of lemongrass chicken is a deal. Five Disco Dumplings, bathed in ginger-jalapeno soy sauce, are a steal at $5. The vegan-friendly Art Car Curry, with potatoes, carrots and mushrooms in a coconut-based bisque, is a great $8 value.

This place was just OK. In a town with amazing Vietnamese pho, Jenni's noodles just did not deliver. My impression before I went was that it would be this HIP little place, but that's not true. They have cafeteria style seating for maybe 20 people. That would be fine if the food rocked, b/c then it would be worth it, but no. Too bad b/c it's hard for little restaurants like this to survive unless they are REALLY REALLY good.

Noodles and Asian food are some of my favorite things in the world. Jenni's Noodle House was really quite average, and the prices make it well below average. This place seems like something they should post on the "Stuff White People Like" blog.

I'd been wanting to try this place for awhile since I always pass by the area. I went for the first time yesterday, and I'm sad to say I'm not impressed. The dishes were overpriced and lacked the flavor I'm accustomed to at authentic Asian restaurants. My meal was alright, but it left something to be desired. I suppose the prices are alright considering the restaurant is in River Oaks, but I would much rather make the drive to Chinatown to get a $6 bowl of noodle soup than pay almost twice as much for this Americanized stuff.
