“decor was beautiful, place was clean, menu seemed promising.”
“The food was BLAND, the chips and salsa (and I use the SALSA term LOOSELY) were horrible, and dont expect any extras like pico, guacamole, sour cream or even jalepanos without paying at least a buck for each one since they dont come with the meal.”
“Only to return with one of the drinks in a dirty glass (there was lipstick on the rim).”

“Great stuff and good service.”
“happy hour prices are great, and the selection is vast.”
“It took a long time to get our food and we had to flag down someone to order more drinks.”
just the right portions. the first time i came here was with my boyfriend. we had a blast. i think the food is amazing and they dont give too much. its always the right portion. after that i come back with my friends and they absolutely love the place. if you drive too fast you may miss it but its so cute. the patio outside is really nice to sit on when the weather permits. i think this place is definitely worth it.
Stay away if you want good service.
I have been to Maria Selma's at least a dozen times over the past year and generally have found the food to be above average. However, the service has clearly deteriorated over the past few months. Orders confused, poor timing, lengthy delays even when not overly crowded. My last encounter topped it all.
Recently I went to the restaurant to meet a friend several days after Ike. We only wanted a non-alcoholic drink and to sit and talk for a brief while since no coffee shops in the area were open. When the waiter understood that we weren't eating, he sent over a man who later identified himself as the owner. I should add the restaurant was at most a 1/3rd full at the time. The owner told us we couldn't take up a table unless we were eating. I told him I was a frequent customer and we were only going to be there a short while. He not only looked at me like I was liying, he essentially asked me to have a seat at the bar or leave. I wouldn't have minded if the restaurant were full, but it was not even close. My friend and iIwent to the bar and stayed for about an hour. While a few folks came in during that time just as many left. I can think of any number of ways the owner could have better handled this situation. With his attitude, it's no wonder the service has deteriorated. With other good restaurants in the neighborhood, Maria Selma's is off my list.
BAD FOOD BAD SERVICE AND NO AC.................. One of my friends told me about this place so we made plans to have a Birthday party there we reserved a table for 20 we got there it was 85 degrees in there. So we asked them to please lower the air no big deal ,lets say we asked four or five times it was hot stuffy nasty and just HOT HOT HOT!!!! The food was BAD Mexican Food. I do not mind spending money eating out but lets say Taco Bell had more flavor, the meat was dry the chips were oily and thshrimp was NASTY . I have my own Business in that area and I deal with lots of clients and lets just say the manager at Maria Selmas needs to take some clases on cutomer service he got a little nasty when we askes about the air. Please got a hole in the wall Taqeria befor going there
Best mango margaritas. This is one of my favorite mexican retsuarants because the food is authentic and delicious. The tacos are awesome and the mango margaritas are definitely the best I have ever had. Make sure to try their ceviche. The outside seating is great for beautiful days and nights and the ambience is really nice.
Ritas Rock. Rita one, rita two, have too many, or have a few.. Spicy mango frozen with salt, if you have too many, it's not my fault. Great place. I highly recommend it.
Pleasantly surprised.
I'm originally from Mexico City and since I came to Houston to do my graduate studies I have unable to find anything that tastes like authentic mexican food, with the exception of Hugo's. Today I went to Maria Selma's for the first time, and I was very happy to find out that it was not another tex-mex place. I was pleasantly surprised by the lack of cumin in the sauces (I don't know who the hell though that mexican food had to have cumin in it).
It might be a bit pricey compared to other "mexican" restaurants, but I think it is worth it.
Overall, i was very satisfied by the authenticity of the food.
Great Food -- But whats up with the A/C?. I agree with most the comments about the food and especially the margaritas, however they seem to have trouble with a/c making the dining room very uncomfortable. Regrettably, we have stopped going there for this reason only. One time isn't the end of the world, but for 3 consecutive visits?
Great restaurant bad service. I really like Maria Selmas. The food is very good, the margaritas have improved and are strong, and the patio is nice-especially now they have a mister. However, in the dozen times I have gone there, the service has only been good one time. The waitstaff have a tendency to argue with patrons when they make a mistake. Recently, I was served the wrong dish and was told it was what I ordered. I do not eat chicken, so I knew that I had not been mistaken. I was made to feel that I had insulted the entire Maria Selmas Family by not taking the chicken. If you go, have low expectations for the waitstaff and you will be fine and enjoy your meal. Hopefully, if enough people leave small tips, the waitstaff will imporve for survival sake.
Amazing Food/Amazing Service. This is an amazing Mexican restaurant on Richmond. The food quality is superb. I have live in Houston for 20 years and this is, by far, the best restaurant.
GREAT TEQUILA SELECTION. VERY LOVELY SELECTION OF TEQUILAS AND MUY BONITO BAR ALSO,THE FOOD IS MORE AUTHENTIC THAN OTHER MEXICAN RESTAURANTS; I RECOMEND THIS PLACE..
