Mockingbird Bistro

Experience Texas Provence - Upscale Casual Dining

  • Award-Winning Wine List
  • Uniquely Welcoming Ambiance
  • Private Functions of All Sizes

Since opening in January 2002, Mockingbird Bistro Wine Bar, 1985 Welch, has garnered rave reviews for its Texas Provence cuisine from diners and critics alike. Chef / Owner John Sheely says Mockingbird is the casual-feel place he has always wanted to open?a place where he himself would like to ?hang out.?

Mockingbird Bistro Wine Bar combines Sheely's Texas roots with a style of cooking that he knows well, that of the Riviera, specifically the French Riviera. At Mockingbird, the feel of the menu is ?country-French-meets-American-market.? Sheely updates the menus seasonally to take advantage of the ingredients available at-market, as well as to give him the freedom to exercise his creativity.

Editorial Review for Mockingbird Bistro – by Citysearch Editors

The Scene
Up and coming lawyers, empty-nesters and nearby Montrose/River Oaks foodies flock for a dash of bohemian dining and a little diversion among the darkly lit chambers. This funky-gothic, lofty nest in a small, '30s-era building chirps with character and cheerful service.

The Food
A hearty, seasonal menu: A crisp, Stilton-gilded bistro salad also contains Granny Smith apple slices. Gruyere cheese atop the 1015 Onion Soup is accompanied by garlic croutons. Dinner is reminiscent of a medieval feast: Large, mouthwatering short ribs over soft cheese polenta, and jumbo asparagus that screams, "eat with fingers." A striking rare-seared tuna steak and olive tapenade, Nicoise-style, or the snappy steak au poivre with watercress and crispy frites are flavorful palate-pleasers.

My Husband and I decided to go treat ourselves before we went to have our taxes done... Boy, did we feel great after eating such a wonderful lunch! The Beef Carpaccio made me think "This is the reason for cows!" The prime steak was another devine beef plate... cooked to perfection and served with some of the world's best pommes frites (or as we call them... french fries). The prices are steep, but what you would expect from a classically trained Chef who operates a beautiful top notch bistro in the middle of River Oaks!?

Pros: Ambiance, Food Selection, Stellar Service

My wife and I recently had lunch together. I could not have asked for anything more. Considering the menu's offerings, it was fairly priced. A bit on the expensive side, but you get what you pay for. The service was prompt and attentive, while far from intrusive. My wife enjoyed her meal immensely, and the mussels were to die for! Not an everyday hangout, but well worth a trip. Kudos to the Chef!
