The best sushi in Houston!. I go to Aka at least once a week and finally found the time to write a review. My favorite thing on the menu is baked mussel, lychee sake blossom, and the seared tuna. Everything here is absolutely wonderful! It is the best hour in Houston!
Good Sushi, Worth the Drive. We live across town and every few months decide to trek out to Aka for dinner. That drive just because much more worthwhile because Aka has recently revised their menu and changed their Happy Hour from 3pm to CLOSE! We ordered all our food off of the Happy Hour Menu and everything was fantastic. The fish (sushi and nigiri) is incredibly fresh and doesn't taste fishy (I'm pregnant and even ate a small piece!) The veggie tempura was crispy and had a nice variety. There is nothing worse than getting soggy tempura with no variety and then you are stuck eating the one veggie you can't stand. The steamed dumplings were also delicious. To top it off, we had the nicest waitress who understood we were having a casual date night; she didn't rush us, was very knowledgeable, and incredibly nice. I often tell people this is the best sushi in town and it's worth the drive outside the loop!
Could've had better. First time here. My friends had raved about it earlier. I had shrimp tempura, a seaweed salad and the caterpillar roll. The food was okay, but I think it could've been better. There was way too much sauce on the bottom of the caterpillar roll. My rice was soaked in it, so much to a point where the rice fell apart when I picked the rolls up. Also the shrimp tempura was flaky, instead of smooth and crisp. It reminded me of Church's Fried Chicken. Other than that, the service was bad. Our server forgot to give my friend her soup and salad until we reminded the server. My friend said it used to better, but she didn't know what happened this time. I don't think I'm ever coming back here again.
AKA Tanks. I ate lunch here today and had a Coke, Calamari Appetizer and Crunch roll. The coke tasted funny, and the Calamari was tough, bland and had absolutely no seasoning. The Crunch roll was O.K., but rather small and blah. After spending close to $18.00 dollars, I expect to leave a resturant satisfied. In stead, I had to pull over at the gas station for a candy bar.
My fave lunch spot now. It was couples years ago that I went to Aka when it just opened. Food and ambience was really good, but a bit overpriced. However, I went again recently for lunch and found their lunch menu has very nice food with reasonable price. Sushi are very fresh and porportion is just fine.
Dine here 4 - 5 times a month, always satisfied (Upper Kirby Loc.).
My co-workers and I often eat here once a week and everyone is always so happy with the experience. Service is great, food is great, price is very reasonable and there is never a wait.
We started my wife?s birthday night at this place with a party of over 20 peps and they treated us VERY well. I suggest you try the Sunday happy hour.
Love it!!!!. I love this place, My boyfriend introduced me to it (we went there on our first date) and since then we go back very regularly. It's hard to find a good sushi place, but this place is fabulous: the food, atmosphere and service. I have to agree with one of the other reviews, it's more of a Tuesday night hang out than Friday night. It's quiet, great for dates... their large booth provide great 'privacy' for conversation. While there Try the "Rock'n Roll' Yummm.
A Must Try!. This is more of a Tuesday evening out rather than a Friday evening. Very quiet and would be perfect for dates. Since this restaurant serves on a smaller scale, they are able to focus on quality of the food. I've been to this location on Eldridge maybe 6 times since I discovered them and I just love it! I usually order sushi (the rolls and the sashimi) and I've had no complaints about them. I've spent the last five years of my life on eating sushi so I consider myself to be a pretty good critic on the subject for an average person (that's what this site is for, right?). You can taste the freshness of the sashimi. I've tried different fish each time and I'll say the salmon and yellowtail are my favorites, esp YT. There seems to be a mild sweetness and when you bite into it, it's firm yet soft on your tongue. No fishy smell whatsoever. Of the rolls, I've tried the Bricktown (pretty good considering and highly recommended if you like your cream cheese), the Crater (sooooooooo yummy! FYI: there is a thin layer of kewpie mayo on top of the scallop in case you wonder when you're biting into it), Tsunami (the apple makes you skeptical until you eat one! The tartness of the green apple mixes with the slight sweetness of the crab), the Rocky Road (not on the menu but very very good), the Rodeo (order it with lemon juice instead of the thin lemon slices which overpowers the whole roll but good with the seared slices of beef. OK roll overall), and the Godzilla (the tortilla chips are Doritos..surprisingly good. It's like putting chips into your sandwich if you like that). Of the food I've only tried the Nabeyaki Udon (good flavor), Dobin Mushi (wonderfully flavored clear broth served in a cute teapot! and when you're done drinking, you get to eat the goodies inside!), Ishiyaki Kobe Beef (grilled at your table...and for the price it's well worth it! Real Japanese Kobe), and the Banana Tempura with your choice of ice cream. So good!
Fantastic, must try.. My wife and I frequent here and have always received great service and delicious fresh food. Recently we went to the happy hour and what great prices on food and drinks! My favorite is the Gozilla roll, it is one of the best rolls and guarantee you will be hooked. We also like to order the Fried BananaTempura with Ice Cream for dessert, so be sure to save room. We have the VIP card and receive 10% each time. This is one of my favorite sushi places. I'm never disappointed. This place also has the looks too, it looks quite chic so provides great ambiance which I don't care too much for because I'll eat at a shack as long as it has good food but it doesn't hurt. It has a calm and peaceful setting starting with the fountains from the front door. I do love the decor inside. I would highly recommend this place and have to all my friends and family, you've got to give it a try.
smell the sushi. this place as soon as you walk in you can smell the fish and that is not a good sign for me. I have eaten at a few sushi places so far and this was not it. My friends and I sat down and the service was also lacking, people were walking around but not helping anyone...For the amount of money you pay go somewhere else!
