The Scene
The funky older building has limited seating inside, but that's OK. It's more fun to grab your tray from the cafeteria-style line and head for the many picnic tables lined up outside on a covered patio. You can still hear the Willie Nelson music blasting away. Look for a curious mix of West U yuppies, blue-collar 'cue fans, Rice students and Montrose bohos. With barbecue this accomplished, a second location was inevitable; Wild West residents and businesses are mighty grateful for the Katy Freeway outpost. Thank your lucky stars you live in Texas and celebrate with another piece of rich pecan pie.
The Food
Moist smoked duck and chicken lean toward the oil slick, but the thick, sweet-spicy-smoky barbecue sauce is in a class by itself, transforming the brisket into a real delicacy. Sides such as potato salad and coleslaw aren't Hall of Famers, but the soft, homemade jalapeño cheese bread is a star player.

First off, I'll admit my bias: I love Texas BBQ. Given the fact that this location is very close to my house, I have dined there frequently. Honestly, I wouldn't say Goode Co's BBQ is the best I've had, but it's up there in the top 10 or so. Good enough for repeat visits, certainly. It's pretty obvious as you pull up to the place that they use red oak for their BBQ wood because it's stacked up like -- well, like cordwood -- along the exterior of the building. Red oak is a good choice, since it imparts a gentle smoke flavor to the meat. Some folks (like my wife) find mesquite overpowering, and if you're one of them, I think you'll enjoy the gentleness of oak. The brisket has always been moist and flavorful, the ribs succulent, pulling easily from the bone, and both the jalapeno and Czech sausage are worth going back for seconds. Probably the biggest surprise is the duck: not too fatty (as duck often can be), with a mild sweet flavor. As for the sides, my favorites (in no particular order) are the jalapeno beans, the Austin baked beans, and the jambalaya Texana. The only thing I've had there that I don't particularly care for is the sauce. I prefer sauce that is tangy with at least a bit of a bite to it. Goode's is too sweet for my taste. But as any Texas 'cue connoisseur will tell you, really good 'cue never needs sauce anyway. Prices are reasonable (especially the duck), ambiance is down home Texas (gotta love the buffalo), and the noise level is moderate.
Pros: Just about all the traditional meats
Cons: the sauce (but who needs it?)

If you want the real thing, this isnt for you. The meat is dry and tough as if it were cooked fast. Anyone that knows bbq understans you gotta cook it slow. Sauce was horrible and sides were nothing big, lacked in flavor.
Pros: friendly people
Cons: very unfriendly food
