Tips for Zana Mediterranean Cafe

October 17, 2003

This casually cool spot stirs a melting pot of Mediterranean flavors.. The Scene
Bicycle couriers, suits and pm partiers wander into Zana's bright, industrial-chic corner in the downtown Hogg Lofts for quick, substantial meals. With a create-your-own-style menu, it truly is beautiful (the meaning of "Zana") to diners who like to have it their way as well as to those who prefer to grab a pre-made lunch po' boy and go.

The Food
Far from dainty, Zana's design-your-own crepes are massive and rich, especially combos like shrimp with caramelized onions, roasted peppers and Alfredo. Mainlining the menu are creative, healthful grilled sandwiches and Mediterranean wraps, constructed with herb bread, harissa aioli, and kofta or chicken. Right on the money: ambitious steak au poivre entree, drenched in deft Cabernet sauce with peppercorns and stout garlic, and the design-your-own pastas (angel hair, artichoke and basil pesto mingled vibrantly). Smoothies and some salad vinaigrettes are sweet enough to substitute for dessert.

First Impressions Count. This was probably the worst dining experience I've had in a long time. Two salads and a bowl of soup took 45 minutes. (There were only two other tables ahead of us.)

The waiter did nothing make our visit any better. We had to seat ourselves, the only words he said during the entire meal were "What can I get you to drink?" and "Are you ready to order?"...no greetings, no thank yous, no apologies for the delay.

This was my first visit and probably my last.

Zana Mediterranean Cafe. Our food was very good. Highly recommend the Shrimp Crepe. The small staff on a Saturday night made the service rather slow. Allow plenty of time if you're planning to take him a show. Although small, it was rather loud. Difficult to hear my wife talk across the table.

Casually Cool & Romantic. Perfect for lunch and a great date restaurant before a night on the town. The food is excellent and suprisingly affordable.

Great Food!. We had lunch today at Zana. We were in a hurry and told the management so...they responded in kind with efficient service. They kept a special eye on us to make sure that we were able to move quickly. Meanwhile, I had the Kefta Burger which was out of this world. I'm looking forward to going back for more! HIGHLY recommended lunch dining. I'm sure it would be a great spot for those nights that you go out to the theater or hit the bars!

It's my favvvvvorite. Zana is the best lunch place downtown. I think I could eat there every day. They have a great selection of kebobs, and create your own pasta or crepes menu that allows for endless combinations of pasta, meat, veggies and sauce. The service is great and there is always a crowd enjoying the fantastic food.
