What Our Expert Scouts Say

Ocean Palace

One of the better dim sum places.... I come to Ocean Palace on the weekend afternoon for dim sum. The very large room on the upstairs level, which doubles as a banquet hall for weddings at night, is spacious enough to accommodate large parties (think large Asian families) and small. The dim sum is pretty good but on the expensive side. The har gow (shrimp dumplings) are $4.95 and the chinese broccolli is also $4.95, a bit high in my opinion. But their staple Xiu Mai dumpling, my fave, is only $2.95 and they taste just like in Hong Kong.

Good Choice. May not be top notch Cantonese food. However, good selection, good food, good experience, and just next to HK market for more food and things Asian.

Good, but with room for improvement.. Ocean Palace is great for dim sum, but like most dim sum restaurants, it's best to go early in the morning, specifically before 11:00 am if you want fast, decent service or just a seat. We usually go at around 10:30 when the restaurant is only about 1/6th full. During that time, the waiters and cart-pushers tend to be much more friendly and faster, but it all changes after 11:30 when the restaurant instantly becomes as packed as a sardin can.

It's fortunate that the dim sum area on the second floor is extremely large and spacious because there are no separations therefore when it's all packed, it tends to get extremely loud and almost chaotic.

Overall though, the food is great and if you go early enough, the atomsphere is quite enjoyable.

The best dim sum. Ocean Palace for dim sum on Sundays is like a whole different world. Make sure you get there by 11:00'ish or else there will be a wait. I've been on 3 different occasions and the food was always very good, with a good variety. The service sometimes seems rushed (well they are trying to get the waiting people seated) but overall, it's well worth your trip.

Service and value. I'm highly recommend Ocean Palace is a good place to eat dim sum. Ocean Palace value is so reasonable, and the service is great. I almost go there every week about 2-3 times. I tried a lot of restaurants for dim sum, and there is the best dim sum even.

Can't believe it's ranked so high. This place may appeal to the American palate, but ask any Asian person, and they will tell you this is one the the worst Chinese restaurants in town. The only upside is that they have a huge ballroom upstairs that caters to the typical large Asian wedding receptions. Other than that, the food is nasty and the service is just not there. The dim sum is just OK. I would much rather go somewhere else for that.

best dim sim in town. After My Canh closed down, Ocean Palace popped up with My Canh's cooks.. so Ocean Palace took over as Houstons Dim Sum King.. The place can get a bit crowded during lunchtime on weekends - only b/c its the best dim sum in town! It might be hard to know what to order if you don't speak Chinese though.

Best dim sum & china seafood in Houston!. I thought Ocean Palace had the best dim sum in Chinatown. I've tried so many places around SW Houston and I couldn't find any that matched it. Also, their selection of seafood, and even frog and duck clams are WONDERFUL! This is a can't miss restaurant in Houston.

Great Real Chinese food!. If you want to have good real Chinese food, this is definitely worth trying. Try to order dishes other than those that you can order from those 'Hunan restaurants'. For example, try the Hong Kong style sweet and sour pork with fresh pineapple.
