Editorial Review for Theater District – by Guy Short
The Scene
The roster of performing arts companies that populate this downtown district is impressive. The Houston Ballet has wowed audiences around the world with virtuoso dancing and Ben Stevenson's inventive classical choreography; the Houston Symphony is among the country's most prestigious concert orchestras. The Society for the Performing Arts continually brings in well-known contemporary dance companies and cabaret acts to round out the season.
The Experience
There's theater for every taste here too, from the Alley Theatre's professional selection of plays to the Houston Grand Opera's innovative take on opera in the late 20th century. And then, in the middle of the nation's fourth largest city, there's cozy little Da Camera, putting on chamber music with theatrical flair.

Best theater district outside of New York. World class. Always a joy to see a play, the opera, the symphony and the ballet all in one convenient area of downtown Houston. Plenty of nightlife afterwards with lots of restaurants and nightclubs.
Pros: crowds, atmosphere, nightlife afterwards

Don't miss the new Hobby Center. It's breathtaking. Wonderful shows and concerts are always available. It's near the Bayou Center, which has everything from formal dining to billards and movies. Go during the winter, it's gorgeous with all the lights. Try Ice skating too. Yep, you can do it Downtown!
