In Short – The Sam Houston National Forest, about an hour's drive north of Houston, consists of 161,000 acres of land and three fully developed campground areas. The Big Creek Scenic Area provides a nearly pristine outdoor experience, while the Lone Star Hiking Trail is a 120-mile-long passage that offers a variety of wildlife, vegetation and terrain. The centerpiece of the forest is Lake Conroe: The 22,000-acre watery playground is a haven for all types of watercraft.
