In Short – Udupi features cuisine of south India where sustainable benefits are reaped from the earth, not animals. Expect a brisk business of many local Indian families and natural non-carnivore types. It takes culinary ingenuity to come up with more than 40 interesting choices using no meat and scarce dairy, but Udupi manages quite well. Try the uthappam, a massive savory potato pancake stuffed with buttery onions, peas, fresh mint and shredded carrots. –
Big Let Down ! Overrated
by Desiman
Visited Udipi Cafe based on the reviews. Either it was one of those exception days - or with passage of time, the quality has come down.
The idly and chutney were poor quality. Vadas and Sambar was good. Uppama was oily. Vegetable Saagu had mostly frozen peas and potatoes - no other sabzis. The waiter was supposed to offer us a dosa of choice. Well ! he did - at the very end as we were having the yummy gulab jamuns for desert. Owner mumbled us a weak apology and he and the waiter got into an argument.
Bathrooms are not clean.
I am positive Houston and its suburb has better options.
- Pros: Veggie Fare
- Cons: Not too clean, poor service, poor food quality
Pest Problems
by drumRC
Yesterday, my girlfriend and I were greeted cheerfully by the server. As we were sitting in the booth on the right wall, we both noticed a "small, brown, oval, flat-bodied insect common in areas of poor cleanliness" scurrying across the floor under our table. We stayed a little while to wait until the server came by again to inform him of the pest problem. For some reason, knowing the restaurant had pest problems, we tried what I've assumed to be bhakri. I pick up the second round chip and saw an ant, which my girlfriend swears was fried with the chip. I then decided to tell our server, but told the chef instead. For some reason, he was out of the kitchen when I approached him. After telling him about the pest problem, he told me that his restaurant, just a day before, passed the inspection. Having the chef lie about the problem made it easier for us to leave. I'm not reviewing the food, since I wasn't there long enough. From my experience yesterday, I would discourage you from this restaurant unless you prefer sharing your dish with the ants and "small, brown, oval, flat-bodied insects common in areas of poor cleanliness."
- Pros: Service was good
- Cons: Pest problem ruining dining experience
Chameleon Consistency
by anuanil
This is a good place for anyone who wants a good spread of vegetarian South Indian food on the menu. It is not a good place for anyone who wants great tasting vegetarian South Indian food. If the cuisine is a novelty to you, then by all means go. On the other hand, if you know how the stuff?s supposed to taste, then you have an even chance of being dissatisfied. The same dish tastes good on some days and awful on others.
- Pros: A long menu.
- Cons: Bored chef(s) turning out boring food.
