Zorro is hiding out in the original Fox Diner den, now a haven for innovative Mexican cuisine..
The Scene
Fox Diner has moved to swankier digs, but the fox--now going by the name Zorro--lives on! Foodies who can't say "adios" are sneaking back in to lunch on zesty tastes of Mexico. Don't let the old Fox Diner logo in front deceive you: Inside you'll find a snug, quite tame, flamingo-festooned cafe serving Tijuana Caesars, sopa Azteca and smoked salmon quesadillas.
The food
Smoky-charred "hamburqueso" has big-time flavor with panela cheese, spicy peppers and avocado, but we had issues with the oversize, bready bun. We were all over the creamy poblano soup--a huge vessel and velvety-rich. Ditto for the fresh, affordable pescado a la mexicano: tilapia brightened with spunky onion-pineapple-habanero salsa. Pork mole verde was piquant and nutty, though the meat was dry. Desserts are few but are prettied up with squiggles of caramel, chocolate and dazzling strawberries.
