In Short – The first Todai Restaurant debuted in 1985 in Santa Monica, Calif., and has since opened in locations across the U.S. and in Hong Kong. The restaurant, with seating for up to 500 people, features a 160-foot seafood buffet offering more than 40 kinds of sushi, all made fresh. The salad selection ranges from Caesar to seaweed to red potato salad. Hot entrees include sukiyaki, teriyaki chicken, sweet-and-sour pork and udon noodles.
Sad Birthday Girl

We went to Todai Monday for my birthday. The meal started out with an ICE COLD glass of Cabernet. I had to send that back. The buffet looked like things on it had been out since lunch. It was only 7:30 and half of the offerings were either extremely picked over or just GONE. Some of the sushi had a funny smell to it and the Ebi was like rubber. At least the Miso Soup was good, but how can you screw that up...
The meat was SALTY and RAW. For someone that is not a seafood fan and likes his meat cooked (my fiance) there was pretty much NOTHING for him to eat! Oh and there was no Lamb on the menu. This was what I was looking forward to the most.
What it boils down to is this... If you want "meat on a stick", go to Fogo De Chao. If you want sushi, go to Miako. If you want crablegs... even Red Lobster is better than this place. We most certainly WILL NOT be going back.
The best thing I can say about this place was that the wait staff was courteous.
- Pros: Nice waitstaff
- Cons: HORRIBLE food
Very Good, But Overpriced
by Jack1111
This would be a 5 star place if it was more reasonable priced. On a week, the dinner is $31.95, which is too much for this place. $21.95 would be more in line with this type of place. Even a child over 6 has to pay 1/2, which is way too much for a child based on what they can eat. Lower the price and this place will be a 5 star place.
- Pros: Great selection; conveniant location; great service
- Cons: Overpriced
Best Sushi Buffet in Town - PLUS MORE!
by g1nahis
This sushi buffet def beats Kirin and TokyoOne by far! Kirin def isn't as fresh as Todai and TokyoOne has a super weak selection compared to Todai.
I actually brought my company to TokyoOne for a Christmas Party and they forgot our reservation, so we had to split into 2 small tables --- it's not something ideal for a company who's trying to build camaraderie. The selection was minimal and boring -- I remember thinking to myself, we should've just paid $2 more for each person for dinner and gone to Todai! Todai not only has a great selection of sushi (always fresh, they even have sashimi!) but it's always super fresh, but it's has Brazilian meats! My company can't afford the $50-something buck Brazilian meat dinner at Fogo, but TODAI's a great compromise. Best of both worlds. Asia and Brazil.
Staff has always been attentive to my BF and I and I would say the staff is great! Def worth the $$.
- Pros: Variety, Freshness, Service
