“The food is always hot and the desserts are always too good”
“For the money I would say it's my favorite restaurant in Houston.”
“Very affordable :)”
A healthy dose of ÉtoufFAT. This cafeteria Cajun favorite of the downtown lunch crowd has its magic down. Despite the fact that you will leave feeling as though your arteries are dripping with butter about to collapse into the very definition of food coma, this is a loveable joint. The menu includes all the classics such as shrimp Étouffée and red beans and rice, all complimented by a giant hunk of old fashioned cornbread. If I had a grandma living on the bayou in Louisiana, this is what I would expect her to feed me. In fact, I can almost hear CCR playing with every bite I take. If you want to provide a taste of the bayou to a tourist or provide a shock to the stomach of a skinny person, Tree Beards is your place.
Jambalaya Daydreams. I daydream about the wonderful jambalaya I used to order at lunch when I worked downtown in the 80's. Go for "The Full Boat" as the large order of J was called. Be generous with the napkins as I ruined more than one shirt and tie with the spicy sauce! Too bad they don't have suburban locations. One in Market Street in The Woodlands would go over very well!
The Best Lunch In Houston. I have been eating at Treebeards since I moved to Houston in the early 80's. For the money I would say it's my favorite restaurant in Houston. Even though I live 20 miles from downtown I still make the trip once a week for the red beans and rice, served "all the way".
Stock up on etouffee and thick gumbo at this downtown lunchtime favorite near Market Square..
In Short
Smart downtowners know about the soulful Southern fare at this wonderfully reliable Louisiana-style cafeteria. Discerning diners and tough critics alike agree this is the place for jambalaya, buttery shrimp etouffee, red beans and rice with link sausage, and homemade jalapeno cornbread. Housed in the second oldest building in Houston, the Baker-Travis Building, the decor is sparse, but still warm and friendly. Treebeards offers unfussy service and reasonable prices. When the weather is willing, dine outside on the balcony.
Yummy!!. Food is very tasty and you can't go wrong picking something bec. its all right in front of you. I love the way your in and out within your hour even though the place is always packed at this time. The people there are always wonderful and customer service oriented. Don't forget your brownie to go.......Highly recommended!
Red Beans and Rice is Nice. Great Food. This place is fantastic. There Gumbo and Red Beans and Rice are the best in Houston. Very affordable :)
Great Desserts. The food is always hot and the desserts are always too good
Red Beans, gumbo, cornbread all great!. I've never had anything other than wonderful food at Treebeards. I've eaten at all locations and I love it. My favorites are red beans and rice (with lots of cheese and onions on top), chicken and sausage gumbo, and cornbread.
