Editorial Review for Houston Museum of Natural Science – by Melanie Haupt

Overview
Where to begin when discussing science and education in Houston? Perhaps you want to learn about butterflies and other insects. No problem: Check out HMNS's Cockrell Butterfly Center, which houses an indoor rainforest and more than 1,500 live butterflies from all over the world.

Features
If you just want to look at rocks and dinosaur bones, that's fine too, because this museum has it all, including traveling exhibits that explore the art and lifestyles of little-known cultures. Don't forget the Wortham Imax theater--the six-story, 80-foot-wide screen will wow you (unless you've got vertigo) with its precise images and close-up shots of charging elephants, hot lava and icy crevasses.

Whether you're a fan of science or just want to spend a few hours in a relaxing, educational environment, this is the place for you. It's affordable, and a great place to take the kids. Also, it's right in the heart of the museum district and within walking distance from Hermann Park and the Houston Zoo.

Even though it's not advertised on their new website, Tuesday 2pm-8pm is the best time to go because the exhibits are free. I paid $5 for the dome show...kind of disappointing, but the stub got us the museum priced parking ($4). Overall it was a nice way to eat up some lazy summer hours for cheap!

Pros: value

Cons: , poor staffing
