Editorial Review for Flying Dutchman Restaurant & Oyster Bar – by Andrea Loera
The Scene
This longtime Kemah landmark offers its diners two distinct atmospheres. Downstairs, the restaurant is casual with cheery nautical-themed décor and an ample, umbrella shaded patio. The ideal setting for families or those in search of a relaxed waterside lunch. Upstairs, the Dutchman makes the change to white linen tablecloths, candlelight and refined amenities. For couples, it's a soothing refuge from the general bustle of the Boardwalk.
The Food
Dine on sandwiches, generous burgers, fried seafood and boiled or blackened entrees downstairs. The main menu features Gulf Coast seafood with a few surprises. Start with the creamy alligator bisque or three varieties of grilled oysters. Sample shrimp, oysters, crabs and fish, including the whole flounder generously stuffed with lump crab. Steaks are well seasoned and paired with rich, garlicky mashed potatoes. A children's menu is also available. Don't miss out on the signature dessert, Colonel Beauregard's pie, a Southern pecan pie dashed with bourbon and topped with chocolate chips.

Insider Tips
Where to SitChoose an outdoor table along the boardwalk for a clear view of passing boats making their way from Clear Lake to Galveston Bay.
Know Before You GoDon't feed the seagulls. After one nibble, you won't be left alone for the rest of your meal.
What to DrinkMake like a local and order up a Kemah Kooler, a mellow concoction of orange juice, rum and melon liqueur.

I used to enjoy going to the Dutchman. The past few times I have gone I have been very disappointed. The only nice thing I can say is that the outdoor seating is nice. We ordered the shrimp cocktail for our appetizer, the shrimp looked as if they had been frozen for years and tasted like it too. I had the broiled fish platter and found it to be inedible ; the scallops were rubbery, the shrimp tasteless, and the fish was not fresh, I could not even enjoy the broccoli which tasted as if it had been microwaved. Honestly, I think we could have had a much better meal at Luby’s Cafeteria! If you must eat in Kemah, try Landry's.
Pros: outdoor seating
Cons: bad food at any price, poor service

I have a like/dislike relationship with this restaurant. My kids like it though - usually their first choice when in Kemah. There is a gross smell, like old tar and wet wood. and the bar is right at the front where you have to walk through the cigarette smell if there is a smoker at the bar. (I don't have anything against smokers but do dislike the smell, lol) I always think of "The crusty crab" when we are there. Most indoor and outdoor tables have great views of the boats going by, as well as the people walking on the boardwalk. There is a big playground right outside that the kids loved when they were younger. We can also watch the kids feed the ducks and fish from off the boardwalk from many of the tables while waiting for our meals. Theres a little cutout where there is a food dispenser...the fat ducks and fatter fish are swarming for the food and the seagulls can't get to it. The food is pretty good and the service just depends on the day - sometimes awesome - sometimes stinks. Some of the tables are a bit too crowded together difficult to get by (and I am average sized) They have a pretty good kids menu and yay! slushies!
Pros: Kid friendly, great view
Cons: odor, service is inconsistent
