User review by red_five. The best-kept secret on Galveston Island; this is where the locals eat their seafood (and the locals know their seafood). Call ahead and order the soft-shell crabs. Be sure to try the house salad-dressing and the homemade tartar and coctail sauces.
Galveston's fine-dining favorite for fresh seafood, island ambience and stellar sunsets over Offats Bayou..
The Scene
This secluded waterfront eatery just off the Causeway has been pleasing regulars with friendly service and unpretentious elegance for more than 20 years. Photos of satisfied celebrity customers line the walls. Owner Clary Milburn is a constant, smiling presence as couples chat softly over candlelight and the catch of the day.
The Food
Gulf Coast seafood with Cajun touches dominates the menu, but Clary's home-cooked flavors are oceans apart from the generic seafood served at many local chains. Start with generously sized crab balls or spicy seafood gumbo. Whole flounder is oven-broiled in a lemon-butter sauce; perfectly cooked and fresh. For a sampling of tastes, the Saralyn B. Platter bears ample portions of the house-specialty butter lump crabmeat--sauteed crab topped with bacon, green onions and cheddar cheese--crisp and garlicky baked shrimp, and grilled oysters. Pork chops, chicken and steak round out the menu. Save room for homemade bread pudding.
Clary's is an Institution. Clary's is one of the best seafood restaurants on the Texas Gulf Coast. The food and ambience on scenic Offatt's Bayou is unmatched anywhere. This is the only restaurant that my family and I will drive 60 miles to experience and we are very close to the best spots in Houston, bar none. Authentic gumbo and the freshest fish on the coast. Plus, Clary is one the nicest and classiest people in the world. I grew up in Galveston and know that this is the best, anyone who dissagrees must work for the competition. Ask the natives!!!
Slow as Christmas. Great Ambience, but thats where it ends. Slow service, cold and tastless food, and high prices. Locals seem to like it, but you will do better to go to Caseys for better food, and a bit lighter on the wallet.
