Great Food, but long lines

by alvinlover at Citysearch

I love going here, but you have to wait in line to order your food and then once again you have to wait in another line to pay for your meal when you leave. I wish I could just sit down and order or pay for it after I order or something so that I don't have to stand in line twice just to eat this great BBQ.

  • Pros: Best BBQ in the world
  • Cons: Parking lot bumpy, needs repair

They just lost a customer

by Garnetpirate at Citysearch

I have been going to Joe's since I was a child. It's always been one of my favorite places to eat, and the people have always been friendly. But today, just days after hurricane Ike destroyed the coast, I decided to call and ask how late they were going to be opened. Considering the circumstances, I thought it was a legitimate question, and a reasonable one at that. I work at a bank, and we had that question all day today. Well, the lady who answered the phone HUNG UP on me! I don't care HOW many people have called in to ask that question, under the circumstances hanging up on me is uncalled for! Needless to say, they have just lost a customer who, at least for the past 20 years, has contributed a lot to their company. All it takes is one time. No one deserves to be treated like that, especially in this time of disaster.

From childhood to adulthood, still the best BBQ!

by emsmwhite at Citysearch

I grew up in Alvin and remember Joe's amazing BBQ as a staple of my childhood. The food Joe's serves up is pretty amazing. Portions are still HUGE, though prices have gone up a little over the years. Don't get me wrong, it's still a pretty solid deal for the quality, taste, and size, and given inflation, the price raise is to be expected.

For years my only regret was that there were no breakfast options. BUT! A friend of the family, recently hired by Mr. Saladino, piloted a new breakfast buffet featuring all the breakfast staples: eggs, meats, potatoes, and breads, but also including made to order omelets and waffles that can you can highly customize. My favourite is a spinach, bacon, and sauteed peppers omelet with a little cheese. For about $6-8/person (price including a drink), you get a MUCH better, made to order, absolutely delicious breakfast than a similarly priced meal at an IHOP or Denny's.

Back to the regular BBQ, though. A family favourite of ours (as well as a LOT of other regulars Joe's lovers) has always been the BBQ baked potatoes. The size of the potato alone is comparable to a Nerf football...then they add a heap of shredded beef, and all the regular potato fixins for a giant mountain of food. Leftovers make a great, hearty breakfast the next day. I'm also VERY fond of the two meat meal, and regularly get the shredded beef and sausage. Their potato salad and beans are the best around, and make excellent accompaniments to their meals.

Joe's is also a regular choice for catering in the Alvin area, and I've never had a meal they catered that was bad. Sometimes it's not as good as when you get it from the restaurant (re: not pipin' hot, a little under-sauced), but it's always VERY edible, and several groups I'm a part of use them on a regular basis.

To wrap it up, Joe's sets the bar high for all its competitors, and I highly doubt anyone will ever surpass their excellence in the BBQ field. If you're in the area, stop on by--you won't regret it!

  • Pros: Best BBQ around, amazing flavour, price, quality.
  • Cons: Table service is sometimes lacking, but that's not the norm.
