Perhaps the worst Tex-Mex Restaurant I've had to go to. I've had to go to Johnny Tamales four times now. The first time, expecting the worst, I ordered Fajitas as this dish is pretty difficult to screw up. I was relieved and surprised that it was at least edible. The next few times I visited the restaurant I dared try the Mahi fish taco's which tasted like they had been frozen reheated, frozen and reheated via microwave - horrible! I had to go again recently and stuck to the simple stuff - Chicken Fajita Salad. The chicken was peculiar tasting, I asked and found out it was marinated in pineapple juice. My three year old daughter unfortunately had some of my chicken. Seven hours later she was throwing up on and off for eight hours. The only good thing I can say that came out of this, is that I have a great excuse to never eat there again! With all the authentic Mexican cantina's in Pasadena, I suggest we Texican's venture out and eat some real Mexican food!
Pasadena Great, Webster Not so Great!!!!. My friend and I started going to the Webster Johnny Tamale awhile ago. The hostesses have always had no personality and not friendly at all and the turnover rate of the waiters and waitresses is ridiculous. We however love the food! The Pasedena location has nice hostesses, waiters and waitresses, you don't have to wait that long, and the food is just as good, it just stinks having to drive to pasadena. The Webster store clearly needs some personality and guidance from Pasadena, they are great!
Best in Pasadena!!. Great food and experience each time I visit. I had given up after dining at the Webster location, but they have done it RIGHT in Pasadena! Highly recommended.
Family-friendly Tex-Mex spot in Pasadena for tacos, tamales, sizzling fajitas and top shelf 'ritas..
In Short
Owner Troy Ybarra ensures that Johnny Tamale stays true to the family motto of hard work and authentic, affordable menu items. The festive Cantina-like exterior hints at the welcoming atmosphere inside the restaurant, decked out in ample booths and South of the Border décor. Expect a menu that's dominated by a variety of enchiladas, combination plates, tacos, grilled chicken and the signature sizzling fajitas (with a secret recipe marinade). A children's menu is also available.
Best Mexican Food in Pasadena. This is the best Mexican food place in Pasadena. The chicken enchiladas are stuffed with white meat chicken and full of flavor--excellent! The tamales are wonderful when they are good, but sometimes they are not as great as others. Their beans & rice are wonderful!
Waste of time. Had to wait over 10 minutes for a table when there were at least six empty tables. The food was horrible, waitstaff was rude and gave our party the wrong ticket to pay, and the overall experience was not worthy of ever going back.
