By the time Memorial Day weekend kicks off the unofficial start of summer, the weather around these parts has been hot and humid for a while. Ray's Franks
Write a Review1302 Nance St, Houston, TX 77002 (map)
Some neighbor will undoubtedly be hosting a backyard barbecue and while we have nothing against a burnt hot dog for old times' sake, we'd prefer the big, all-beef dogs at Ray’s. Possible fixings include curry ketchup, bacon wrapping and goat cheese and the excellent fried sides are served in a charming air-conditioned environment.

Mam's House of Ice Snoballs

It seems like everyone in Houston wants a snow cone the same afternoon that you do and they’re all waiting in one long line. We'll happily wait in the heat for Mam’s, which makes the best. Unique flavors include mojito and caramel apple and we highly recommend the condensed milk option.

Cedar Creek Cafe

Between the frozen spiked ice teas and hill country paraphernalia, this burger and beer joint practically defines Texas summer. We love the big patio on nice days but there’s plenty of room indoors if it’s too steamy.

La King's Confectionery

Trips to the murky waters of Galveston are highly likely this weekend and throughout summer, so where should you seek respite when the sun has you feeling like a fried egg? La King’s is back after post-hurricane renovations and ready to meet all your chocolate malt, soda fountain and saltwater taffy needs.

With a jukebox, wide selection of cheap beer and a spread of picnic tables, this ice house is a fantasy backyard--but with more grit.
